Thanks for your replies, though I'm more interested in finding out the identity rather than the production date of my saw being it doesn't have a UT number as most Homelite units have. Want to be sure as to purchase the replacement parts specific for my saw.

Thanks again!! would you know or point me in the right direction to find: The O.D. of the shaft where the clutch drum rides on? The I.D. of the clutch drum bore? The O.D. and I.D. of the clutch drum race?

To my knowledge, those dimensions don't exist anywhere other than just measuring new parts. I've replaced lots of sprockets and never measured any of the parts. Usually if you replace the clutch drum/sprocket, you're good.

I am not sure of build date for my red XL12, mod 10445B, ser 503230170. I thought that would make it 1975, but it has the infamous blue prestolite electronic ignition, didn't those coils come out later on, in the late 80's?

I really missed on that one! I should have known better as I think production of the XL-12 ended in the late 80's

so I have serial # 493410122- If I understand this correctly this means assembly line #4 in 1979 and number 122 built that day-but what throws me is it December 17th or May 2nd ?The chart shows may 2nd on the Julian calendar but Day # 341 would be December 17th so not sure which is correct or if I am completely off base

The 122 was number built that day. It could go from 1 to 1001 or more. The 341 the day it was built, thus Dec 17 1979 & 122 unit built that day. Sometimes those charts can be confusing. You did good.

IPL "should" be 24228. Go to acresinternet.com. At the top of the page click on chainsaws. Go down to Homelite & find your model.Should have information you are looking for.

Hello, My grandson gave me a old Homlite super XL automatic for my 63rd brithday and I was wondering if anybody could tell what year it was built. The serial # is 43362335. It is a red saw and it still turns over and has good compression. He thought that it ran but I have not tried to start it yet. Thanks, Mike

Based on the serial number alone, I'd say 1974...but that era tended to also have a "lot #". If you have that number, post it here and we can nail it down.

But I just posted on the 7digit thread ( I think it worked) I just got this saw a month ago and lighter or faded blue and white super xl ao also but has the riveted tag sn 2996501 trying to get it #'s for both apparently to get any parts you need a ut#

Maybe you guys already said this somewhere, but if you're taking these things apart, look at the plastic. Lots of these plastic componenets have the month/year molded right into them. The little arrow pointing at the month, with the year over top of it. Regardless of the serial number availability etc, you'll still know that for example, "The gas tank was manufactured in Feb 78, then you can assume the saw was manufactued within a year or so and you'll have an idea of how old your equipment is............ The back of your starter housing, the starter pulley, the fuel tank, a/f covers, etc, many of these components have that date right on there. Helpful when planning b-day parties for your equipment.
