Super XL AO color change. I know it's an old thread but I just acquired a blue Super XL AO, serial # 41272772. I have a red Super XL AO, serial number 43220805. If I'm decoding this right the blue one was built June 21, 1974 and the red one Nov 28, 1974. Does this mean the change from blue to red happened between these dates?
Also found it fascinating that the blue one was the 2772'th saw off the line that day. Those saws must have been selling like hot cakes.

Also found it fascinating that the blue one was the 2772'th saw off the line that day. Those saws must have been selling like hot cakes. I have always questioned the serial number translation on these. Typically, on any other equipment, the unit # is not the unit count built that day, but the unit built for that model. The year and day is accurate, but they weren't building thousands of each model, every day. They hit 3,000,000 units in what, 1972? That means they weren't building over 140,000 XL AO's per year. If you take that 3 million, and spread it out over 20 years of nonstop production, you land at 410 units, per day, for all models (and look how many Homelite was offering). Now consider that the 3 million number includes both the US and Canadian plant, and you have a couple hundred saws per day, which seems much mroe reasonable. Let's guess and say there were 30 folks in the plant assembling saws each day, and that is 15-20 saws per day, per person. Rough math, but it certainly points to Homelite not building thousands of each model, each day.

Nimrod55: Go to first page in this post. There are charts there that should explain how to read the numbers. If you have any question, please post them.

This was my dad's saw. He used it for decades to heat our home but hasn't been ran since he passed in '97. It hold a lot of memories of my childhood helping him I want to get it back running so that I can share those memories with my grandsons. I know that it predates me and I'm an '74 model. If I'm understanding right, it is a '73 model built June 18th and the 462nd saw built that day.

I just picked up a Homelite-Terry XL-1 automatic from a friend and took it apart to clean it all up and realized it has no air filter so before I order one I wanted to get a second (or more) oppinion to make sure I'm doing this right. The UT no is 50159 and the Serial no is T8107030. From my understanding it would be a XL-1AO built in 1981 and was theb30th saw made that year. I also had a question because while cleaning this saw up I realized my air intake screws got put on so bloody tight I cannot get them off, does anyone have a tip for getting those big flathead screws out so I can check it out? I hope I added the pictures properly.... flic.kr/p/2o1fmGv flic.kr/p/2o1jbXe flic.kr/p/2o1kg5M

Ok, I give up trying to figure this out. What info can anyone get from this tag on my C72. 3002083 Really appreciate the help! That would have been built in early 1969. There are no records decoding a 7 digit serial number. However, we do have sales records from the late Joyce Wilson (Chainsaw lady) that tell serial numbers of saws and the date they were sold. That gets a close approximation of when it was built.

Bump.
I'm also interested in the build date of this saw, actually not this particular saw but specifically how to decode the 5 digit alpha numeric lot number. I haven't typically worried about serial numbers and dates since my days of filling out warranty forms but now I would like to know how to decode serial/lot numbers.
From what was just shared in another post, I'm guessing C6238 was built on the 238th day of 1976? Could someone with the build date knowledge please confirm?
Thank you

blythkd: Looks correct. Built 1976 Aug 26. If you go to the first post, in this section, there are 4 charts that should help explain how to decode serial numbers / lot numbers. Use the other 2 to see what date they were built. The first letter, C, is not used. That should be the line it was built on. Might not work on all saws. Hope this will help.

Thanks. I've reviewed all those postings on the first page of this thread and didn't see anything that addressed the 5 digit alpha numeric lot numbers. That's why I asked for clarification. Is there a key to this type of lot number somewhere?
