I think many of us could benefit from a good educated explanation of "chipper chain". I think for many of us, chipper chain is one of those esoteric descriptions that nobody really understands, they just kind of nod & smile knowingly.
From what I can see in TJ's pictures, the width of the tooth doesn't cross the midpoint of the chain so each tooth only cuts about half of the kerf compared to non-chipper(?) semi-chisel? I guess my question is, what is the primary difference between "chipper chain" and a modern chain that's typically referred to as full chisel or semi-chisel? What make a chain/tooth design chipper or not?

Chain installed....very happy to have stock chain on there. Looks better and will cut better to. Last call will be painting the bar and helper handle. Bar will be primer gray and the stinger is going to be green with a red knob I think. Not entirely sure yet. Every time I lift the saw over my head to hang it up there it keeps getting heavier. 001 by TJ McCauley, on Flickr 002 by TJ McCauley, on Flickr 004 by TJ McCauley, on Flickr

"Every time I lift the saw over my head to hang it up there it keeps getting heavier." Well, you did just add roughly five pounds of chain. Looking awesome. Can't wait to see it cutting.
FYI, I use similar hooks to hold my saws on my basement ceiling and once in a while wonder how close I am to their limit with the heavier saws... Just went down there earlier to find all my treework ropes on the floor, next to the hook they were hanging from... My first thought was, Crap! I just walked into the basement with a bear, but a quick glance at the meat freezer a couple feet away and it was untouched. Was a good amount of rope on there but still shocked it pulled out without help.

True on the chain....and then adding more weight with paint. haha! Good to know on the hooks....been ok thus far....I may see about sneaking a 3rd one in there on this one cause she's a beast.

Scratcher is the original, chipper put Oregon on the map so to speak, chisel is newest and has several types depending on how it is ground and the exact cutter profile. Chisel is an improvement on the general chipper design. Scratcher is much like handsaw tooth profiles and makes sawdust. Chipper wraps around and cuts a chip, which scratcher cannot do. Scratcher often has 5 different cutter teeth, chipper only two. Chipper teeth are rounded. Chisel is more square in profile, still makes chips. Semi and full chisel are more and completely square respectively. They cut the wood fibers with less horsepower but the edge is finer and they get dull easier. Chisel has several different filing possibilities, along with chipper there are many different angles possible. Ripping and crosscut are the general categories. Chipper chain is just the original saw chain as we know it today. All other chains are just improvements over chipper chain. Here are some of the differences between each cutter type. Chipper chain, rounded cutter, good all around chain, sharpens with a round file Micro bit, or semi chisel, rounded cutter, (less rounded than chipper) good all around chain, sharpens with a round file Chisel chain, square cutter, fastest cutting chain, can be round sharpened or square sharpened. (requires a special grinder or a flat file to square sharpen) Square sharpened is the fastest cutting chain.

My pioneer ra pulls a 32 with chisel pretty good.

Chisel chain doesn’t have as good stay sharp qualities as semi chisel. Once that corner dulls it won’t cut very well. It’s best for only clean green wood. Fallen, dirty, abrasive wood, stump work, it’s best to use a semi chisel chain.

Decided to revive this ol build thread to document the repaint of the parts where the clear crinkled. I got the decals from sugar creek and now waiting on clear coat. I'm thinking I stacked to much clear on the parts that crinkled and "solvent trap" may be what caused it. It's a common issue with stacking clear on heavy and not waiting long enough between coats which is what I did when I rushed my evenings dying to have this saw done. haha Live and learn and she'll be looking sharp again soon!

I stacked too much clear on a car header too quickly several years ago, my first experience with clear, and it bubbled. But the bubbles popped and left fish eyes. I accelerated the cure in an oven though. Did you do an accelerated cure or just ambient temp cure?

Ambient temp for me, If I do the repaint any time soon I'll have to heat the parts with a heat gun and spray them to prevent runs. It's been in the 20s at night here and I only have a wood stove in my shop so getting it warm takes awhile and paint fumes are rather flammable lol

Well all my paint is here and so are the decals so it looks like I'm gonna have to get my butt in gear and start some blasting lol Hoping to this week and this weekend. Gonna wait for warmer weather if it gets cold again as I wanna take my time on the paint this go around to be sure nothing goes haywire. Excited to get this saw back on the rack! 273480986_311327104393246_144177589174277703_n by TJ McCauley, on Flickr 273184117_288240276574453_1864899816397046573_n by TJ McCauley, on Flickr As you can see I've got silver and grey in the mix. I never did paint the bar or the helper handle so now I have an excuse to finish it. Gonna see about having a buddy of mine making some vinal decals for the bar saying HOMELITE "Big Hoss" Figured that'd be cool and unique. Haven't decided on the color for the helper handle. Anyone got some suggestions?
