I bought this 990G a couple months back and I decided I was tired of looking at it and have a 56 inch bar in the way so.....time for another resto. Picture of what I started with. This saw will be a Runner for gtg's! 001 by TJ McCauley, on Flickr Thursday of last week I worked a half day and then spent a couple hours tearing apart the saw and cleaning it. We have a hot tank at the shop so making a grimy saw look spotless is as easy as taking it apart...putting the parts in the washer and then waiting 10 minutes. Needless to say it did an amazing job on this saw. I'm quite happy with how good of shape it's in as well. One thing I noticed is it has the taller gear ratio of the two options. YAY! Little more chain speed. haha 001 by TJ McCauley, on Flickr 002 by TJ McCauley, on Flickr Even though this ol beast had SUPER low compression the piston and cylinder are in pretty darn good shape. Piston looks worse in the pictures than it really is. Did a ball hone on the cylinder and it cleaned up beautifully. 003 by TJ McCauley, on Flickr Parts I have stock up so far. Going with dupli color self-etching primer.....victory red, metal flake green, black, & silver....also got a couple cans of the spray max clear so it will be put to the test with gas, oil, and saw dust for peeling and blemishing resistance. 004 by TJ McCauley, on Flickr Lot of parts to blast and paint coming up. 005 by TJ McCauley, on Flickr And the big honkin 56" bar. 006 by TJ McCauley, on Flickr

Great project TJ, I think you're going to like the clear epoxy

I am always amazed by the size of the gears in these old saws. They would be good for 40 horsepower if used in a modern car.
What is the curved copper tube for next to the big output gear?

No kidding.....if these saws turned 13000 rpm like the new ones gear drives might still be around in my book. lol Course everyone would complain about lugging around a chuck of Iron. haha Pretty sure that is a case breather. Looks to be a one way so as to not let gear oil seep out.

I'm planning on applying it over the decals as well. May have a line on a set of rings from a guy on another forum. One thing that annoys the hell out of me is that people respond to my ads on their saying they HAVE them and then acting like they don't want to sell them. It's like c'mon! Sell the damn things or don't!

Haven't forgotten about this saw by Any means. haha Been working 50+ hour weeks so my motivation while being exhausted has been low. Located piston rings awhile back and I am just waiting on decals. Want to do this the right way so I'll be waiting on them to be here before I start painting so I can do it all at once. Have everything I need minus one crank seal which I believe I will go ahead and reuse as condition seemed fine. Got the blasting cabinet cleaned and fresh media in there along with window liners so that is ready. Pretty much waiting on decals. Have a 3 day weekend coming up for Memorial weekend so I may start working on it then. Also getting back onto my truck so.....LOT's to do. haha 005 by TJ McCauley, on Flickr 002 by TJ McCauley, on Flickr 001 by TJ McCauley, on Flickr

What media are you using and how much does it take? Also, how many CFM does your pot need?

What media are you using and how much does it take? Also, how many CFM does your pot need? I've been using glass bead media and that cabinet is capable of 50 pounds of sand I believe. Takes VERY little cfm to blow paint off these saws. I probably use around 60 psi at most when blasting and new media makes Fast work of it.

Thanks, I use a sanding sponge pads that that only have abrasive on one side, ranging from 80 to 220 grit. The super soft sponge can push into the smallest crevices and I can feather out the paint in several rounds of sanding using finer pads. It may take more time, but its a great aerobic exercise on my upper body and arms. I may look into the blasting cabinet, but I will have to finish restorations on three old garden tractors to have the room.

TJ's absolutely correct, the old paint comes off quick with clean media. I've been using aluminum oxide with great results.

The restoration of my truck gets me plenty of hand sanding. haha Color sanding with 400 and 800 grit then 3 stage cutting and buffing when the paint is done.

It gets a dull aluminum colored finish, similar to what happens if you wire wheel a magnesium part.
