Since have the complete saw I suppose I better get her running. I have not inspected everything but she turns over and has spark. Any advice on the fuel mix I should use? I have 50:1 Amsoil 2 cycle mix but not sure what is best for these older saws. My thoughts on an old saw like this is if it will be totally rebuilt with new seals and pressure tested 50.1 would probably okay if tuned right. Now if you are going to get it running with minimal repairs I personally would run 32.1. It will give you more protection with worn seals and small vacuum leaks which all lead to a lean mixture.

I just joined this site yesterday and have been reading many past posts to get familiar with all the great info here. One thing that escapes me however is the "UT" number which all the IPLs are based. So I'm hoping someone can confirm my analysis. First a couple of pics of the XL-12 that's been in the family since new: The serial number (21040572) indicates the saw was manufactured in 1972 in the 104th day (April 14th) and was the 572nd saw made that day. At the top left of the nameplate, there's "59025-B" printed (not stamped like the serial number); I haven't been able to find any reference to what this means. So I'm figuring the "UT" number is 10080. Also, I thought the carb was a Tillotson HS-179-B based on what I could see of it before I removed it and the UT-10080 IPL. But after I removed it, it's stamped "HS96A 2" (can't post anymore pics). Not sure whether the trailing "2" is part of the model number (or iteration). As far as I know, this is the original carb. I'm looking forward to reading all thoughts. Thanks.

Welcome to the House of Homelite.
I think you have the date correct. There should be a date and month on the carb that is usually a couple of months before the serial number if it is the original carb. 59025-b is the part number of the data tag.
The other UT and carb questions will have to wait for someone else to help with.

Ok so here is what I have. UT number 10045C Serial number is HJ3330245. So if I am reading this correctly the saw was made between 1986 and 1988 its was made the 333 hundred day of the year and was the 245th off the line. Is this correct or am I reading more into it than need be?
Great running saw bought it at a yard sale along with two others gave 44 dollars for all 3 not knowing which ones would run. growing up with nothing but Homelite in the house hold I figured it any would run this one would. Sure enough a little fresh gas and 3 pulls fired right up. Brings back memories and I love the loud sound.
Thanks Mike

With a UT of 10045-C , shouldn't that be a SXL AO ? It may have a XL-12 starter or clutch cover .

Thanks. My Homelite all red XL-12 UT #10045-C Serial #4F2050126 has a warranty paper that has 2/84 in the lower right corner. My small engine repair guy says always run 50.1 fuel mixture as today's gas and oil are far better. Others have told me 32.1. Don't know who to believe. Any recommendations?

Run 50:1 synthetic. Modern oils are far superior to what we had back in the day.

I was given a Homelite XL-12. Ser 44507741. I knew it was old and still had old gas in the tank that looked like varnish. Nasty dirty full of saw dust. I took it apart and clean it up. Put some fuel in it and it started and ran pretty good. Sharpened the chain and cut 5 or 6 logs up. I'm impressed that the saw ran without me having to rebuild the carb. American made tools are awesome. Heavy for it size. My dad had one back in the 70's I think this one was made in 71 or 72 maybe. Can anyone confirm that.

So, that's an 8 digit serial number. According to the memo, yes, year would be 1974, but then it would be made on the 450th day of the year...... That can't be. Is it possible the saw has a lot number sticker on it also? As I understand it, a lot sticker trumps a regular serial number tag. Dan
