I was always under the impression that the Super XL's switched to the red/black paint scheme around 71 or 72, but the past year has taught me different. I've seen multiple 1973 saws still in the blue & white. Good info on the tag switching dates! Here is a photo of a SuperXL in blue in 1974? SXL id by Clasec, on Flickr

Yes, January 25. (But I am not as certain about it being a SuperXL without a UT number.)

Super XL serial number AO 03264560
XL-12 serial numbers 2490532 and 1955599
One of the XL-12s has a Tillotson carb and molded fuel line and fine thread fuel cap. The other has a Walbro carb and small fuel line with rubber grommets in the fuel tank and carburetor box. The one with the Walbro carb does not have a manual oil pump. The Super XL has an external copper fuel line with short rubber fuel line. Got the Super XL running with a new fuel line, carb kit and cleaning and setting the points. The XL 12 with Tillotson carb ran with a new fuel line and carb kit and cleaning and setting the points. The XL 12 with Walbro carb is locked up.
Thanks for any help/info,
Will

Hello- I have a Homelite XL-12 I can't find the date on. I read the service bulletin that explained the coding scheme. But I only have an
8 digit serial. the first digit should be disregarded (last paragraph says it would be assembly line with 9 digit serial. 4 year code 1974 511 511th day of year? doesn't make sense.. 1043rd made on that day
I included a pict of the rest of the saw because I understand the colors can indicate something..
I also looked for date on carb/.. couldn't find one. but it does have a Tilotson 179b carb
So how old is this chainsaw and what is it worth? thanks

This is a saw that my dad purchased new from our local John Deere dealership. I thought he bought it in 63 or 64, but Joyce's sales records indicate it was likely purchased in 1966. The number is 2108748p I am curious what that p that is stamped on the end of the serial number means. I have cut close to 100 cords of wood with the saw and I have the hearing aids to prove it. I still love that loud saw and look forward to teaching my son to use it. Attachments:

Hope it's ok to post this here just trying to figure out this UT stuff.
I recently got a Super 2 and unlike my original Super 2 that has a S/N of 454-08452 This one has the UT50162 and a S/N T8802730 (the last three digits are just a best guess as the sticker is damaged)
What exactly can be deduced from those numbers? I tried looking online and seems there are too many UT number for it to be just a different way of saying "Model No." Or did Homelite really make that many different models of saws?
