Well it was finally warm enough to get my other projects done so I can get back to chainsaws, yay. Currently in the process of getting everything painted and ready for decals. Step 1 complete. Should I replace the crankcase seals while I’m in there? They pass visual inspection and are still in rubber form but I’ve already got it apart so it’s a good time to do it. Opinions are appreciated.

Personally can't imagine not changing seals at this point. A lot of effort to get this far torn down and paint prepped be a shame to pull apart after paint was finished.

I agree with scotts. Just makes sense to do things when you have it torn down already.

The second one. You want the one that fits the large carburetor barb, look closely at the pics in the links.

Your saw should require the FLS21B,the other line & grommet (FLS21A) is for the newer XL-12's & SXL's that have the smaller fuel lines that were NOT molded. Ed

I'm legally blind & I resemble that remark.Lol I believe you want the 6th IPL,the one for "Old Blue & Big Red,IPL # 19834-A.The SXL's are all pretty much the same except for carb changes & coil changes,& the early SXL's were auto oiling only, but a manual oiling kit could be bought & added on. Ed

Thanks for the info. Here’s a little update, primer is finished and the first coat of color is done. This is starting to look real good.

Nice work! Your SXL Automatic is the same as the one that sits under my bench, with the depleted manual oiler. I found more similarities with IPL#24228, Rev.1 Thanks for keeping the forum abreast with the pictures and the interest in saw restoration. Good luck at keeping this affliction of saw collecting at bay.

oh boy, I've been real bad about not making any progress on this saw. Between doing part time small engine repair, school (or lack there of), and rebuilding an alfa romeo just haven't been getting around to the saws much even though the number of them keeps growing. I'm off tonight to get the last of the paint I should need besides a clear coat which I'm yet undecided about what to use (please chime in I'm a little clueless). Also looking for advice on applying the sugar creak decals as I've never done anything like that before.

Alright, progress has been made, parts that needed white added have been masked and had 1 coat applied. Also ordered a can of the spray max 2k clear that Leon recommends since setting up the hvlp gun for suck a small batch is a bigger mess than it’s worth. Pictures: Dad helping cut masking for the white (He used to do auto body work) First coat of white on Looks a little yellow but it’s just poorly lit garage. Will probably be moving on to the water slide decals from sugar creek this weekend and would love some advice from someone who has used them before.

Ah a good resource, thanks sweepleader. Would be interested to hear from Leon on his application process as well. The only one I’m scared of is the one on the starter cover since it goes on a rounded surface.

Well had a bit of setback today, went to remove the masking on the clutch cover and found a paint adhesion issue. As far as I can tell it’s a filthy finger touched part after priming issue so all is not lost. I will blast it back bare and try again.

Painting these saw parts is really tricky......unless you are a painter. I’ve never taken on an entire saw test but I have painted handle bars and air box covers. Al it takes is one little error and you’re stripping everything down and starting over. It’s really frustrating! I’ve really struggled with the clear coat application. Possibly it’s the brand that I’m using(Duplicolor) It runs very easy! Keep up the work. Looking forward to seeing the completed saw.

Recently I've been cleaning up some of my hand tools and shooting them with clear coat. I used Rustoleum clear coat. First coat was misted on,let dry then 2nd coat.

I’m going to be using the spray max 2k clear that Leon recommends. Haven’t had a chance to repaint yet as it’s been a tad to cold and wet around here
