Here’s a pic of 2 NOS Homelite bars, ( PT18321-G4 and a PT18371-G4) the lower one is .325 pitch and has pointed teeth. The upper one is 3/8 lo pro and has more rounded teeth.

Here is a pic of the chain measured across 3 rivets. It measures 3/4 in.I also put the bar on & tightened the bar nuts, the clutch drum spins freely.

Then that’s 3/8 pitch. I can’t tell from the pic if it’s regular 3/8 or 3/8 lo pro. Put chain on bar but without saw, does the chain move freely on the bar. Look to see if the bar rails are to tight in a spot, or if any drive links are burred, bent, ect....

With 9 teeth, it should be 3/8 lo pro.

With 9 teeth, it should be 3/8 lo pro. This is what I figured yesterday when I did the measuring & testing. The problem I have now is finding a #37 clutch drum (lo pro).I did find one on Chainsawr, not sure if it's the right one.It has 6 teeth,Homelite part # A97172-B.They don't say what it fits & they want $29.95 + $9 shipping A little pricey for me. Ed I wouldn't pay that either. Always shop around. Leon has one 12 bucks. NOS Homelite too. www.leonschainsawpartsandrepair.com/store/p2444/NOS_Homelite_240%2C_245_Chainsaw_3%2F8%22_Pitch_Spur_Sprocket_A-97172.htmlAll 6 tooth drums are 3/8 lo pro. Regular 3/8 chain won't even fit around a 6 tooth.

Thank you so much Greg for all the help you've given me on this "nightmare"of a problem. As I said in the beginning,it's cheaper to change out the sprocket, than to buy a new bar & chain. Ed

I would still buy a new chain, if that 3/8 chain was ran on a .325 sprocket, you can be sure some of the drive links are damaged.

I plan on it because I have no idea what the chain is that came with the saw.I never heard of a 58j. Ed

There's no name on the chain anywhere, just the #58j on the drive links.Yes,it looks like the chain on Ebay which is .058 ga. That's the next question I have - what ga.should I get,.050?

3/8 lo pro only comes in .050. It was never made in any other gauge that I know of.

I got the 3/8 LP clutch drum from Leon yesterday (thank you Leon!) & installed it on the 245.My next step is to buy a new 3/8 LP .050 ga.chain to fit.Can anyone tell me how many drive links there should be?I saw a few different chains on Ebay that ranged from 56 DL to 64 DL.I currently have a 17 in.bar. Homelite didn't make a 17" bar...if it's a 16" it'll take 59DL and an 18" takes 64DL.

I went to my local saw shop today & bought a chain for the"little demon"It turned out to be an 18 in.bar.I haven't fired up the saw yet to see how it works now that everything is 3/8 LP.I'll give it a shot tomorrow. Ed

Update - I fired up the 245 today & was pleased with the results;no chain binding anymore, woo hoo! I guess it helps to have everything - the drum sprocket, the bar,& the chain to all be matched.I'd like to thank Greg Underwood (Undee70ss) for his countless hrs.of research & help in this fiasco,& also to Leon, our administrator here for having the part I needed (drum sprocket),& everyone else who helped out in one way or another.
