I think if you were to use a sealant, use Motoseal because it's gas & oil resistant. Ed

Motoseal is fuel and oil resistant and will work good as a replacement for a gasket. But they don't recommend it as an gasket sealant...good old gasgacinch is my preference: gasgacinch.com/

Does that stuff have the brush under the lid and it’s a real thin viscosity? If so it’s just what I’ve been looking for. It would be the closest thing I know of to a Caterpillar sealant I used to use on heavy equipment. I used to use that Cat sealant on axles on 40,000lbs rear drivers with no gasket. Just brush it on and it would never leak. It would make you think it would never work cause it was kinda thin watery almost but I never had it fail anywhere I used it. Tried to buy some more a couple of years ago and they don’t make it anymore

A similar product to the Gasgacinch is Permatex Aviation Form A Gasket No. 3 : Sealant Liquid
Seals any type of gasket, close fitting machined surfaces, hoses, etc.
Gas, oil, coolant, axle fluid resistant. USA MIL-S 45180D, TYPE III
Should be adequate for a chainsaw if it keeps aircraft in the sky.
Also, the fuel hose appears to be too long in the photo, and there is some remaining debris in the "gap" between the fuel tank and crankcase...clean behind the coils too.

Yea I took that pic as soon as I got the cover off. I have since cleaned it a bit more thoroughly. I was actually suspect about the fuel hose on the fuel hose from the beginning. It doesn’t really seem to fit the line on the outside but the line on the outside has a relatively big barb on it. It fits the carb right though

I was reading up on the two products mentioned in this thread - Gasgacinch & Permatex Aviation Form A Gasket. The Permatex sealer is a slow drying formula, but I couldn't find anything about the Gasgacinch drying time. Ed

I ended up using a Permatex brand sealant. It is pretty similar I believe to the gasgacinch with the exception I picked it up at a local parts store. I got the tank cover with new gasket installed last Sunday (I think) and I put fuel in it Thursday night. Tonight there is no sign of a leak including when I take the starter cover screws out.

What did you end up using on the holes caused by too long of a screw put in the starter assembly?I read back through the thread & didn't find what you used. The last I saw was a suggestion by Rowdy to use a screw, cut the head off,& put a slot in it to use a screwdriver on.You also mentioned trying to find a set screw. I didn’t use anything in them. The tank is two piece and the outer piece that the starter cover bolts to is called the tank cover. I just replaced it with a new one
