Earlier today I decided to take the muffler off my SXL-902 & see how it looked in there.I noticed that whoever owned the saw previously liked to try to turn the poor thing into a Frankensaw. There are 3 muffler screws that hold the muffler cap on,they should all be factory shoulder bolts, only one of them was.It must be they were out cutting & lost a screw,& then another.Instead of getting new bolts & lock-tite them in so they stay in,they put a course threaded bolt in one hole,& get this - they put a WOOD screw with a washer on it in the other hole.I don't know if I can save the muffler by re-tapping the holes.Even if I can re-tap it I know the muffler won't be able to take another factory shoulder bolt. The piston & cylinder looked as shiny & smooth as a newborn baby's behind.I decided to take a compression test & I was disappointed.I only got 100psi.How much compression should an SXL-902 have? I got it to pop & run with just the fuel that I squirted into the carb, but I seriously doubt that I'd be able to cut with it.I know that the rings (I think there are 2) might be seized a bit on the piston,so I'm going to squirt some new formula PB Blaster into the cylinder & see what happens. That was a real let down today.

Try some 50/50% ATF/acetone in that cylinder. It works quite well at freeing stuck rings. Squirt in some, turn over a bit, more. Let soak, repeat, repeat. I have resurrected several "scrap" saws with it. I used Dexron but I doubt the type of ATF matters.

I found a ring on Ebay Part # 55038-1.Is that the ring I'll need to replace on my SXL-902? I don't have any tags on the saw,so it's hard to figure out which ring/part # I'll need.I haven't re-checked the compression yet,but I'm betting that's why they quit using the saw.I was told that most of the saws in that XL family used a 2 in.ring.

I went out to the garage & decided to take another compression test,it came up from 100# to 125#,so I put it back on the bench & squirted more PB Blaster into the cylinder through the plug hole.I took the muffler off & squirted more PB Blaster into the cylinder there.I pulled it over slowly & could hear hissing.I knew I was losing compression somewhere. That's when I took a closer look & discovered that I DO have a decompression valve on the saw! The decompression valve was leaking. Now,what I'd like to know is can I just put a plug in the place of the decompression valve? At this point I don't know if I can even find one.I don't have the linkage for it either & I don't have the throttle lock assembly either. This saw is beginning to bite me in the ass.

Can you match up the thread pattern and use a small bolt? These are the issues I found when I first stated collecting garden tractors, components missing that are no longer available and eBay sellers want a bunch if they even have them.

I was told a plug was made by Homelite. Maybe Leon or Joyce has one.

Looking at the IPL for a SXL-902 a decompression valve was not used.. and the handle assembly didn't have provisions for the operating linkage...A decomp. valve was used on the XL-903 and XL-904 part # A-65883 (Leon has one in stock),but the handle assembly is totally different..Your SXL-902 is perhaps a combination of two saws...at least the cylinder is off a XL-903-904...Plugging the hole or cleaning the old valve(to get it to seal) are good options...Compression pressure on a SXL-925 at normal operating temp. should be 155-185 psi..and the XL-903 used a 2-1/16" piston, rings part# 55537 (Leon has these as well) ... best of luck with your project..

I have seen this on several occasions in just the short time I've been into Homelites, I haven't noticed it on other brands, but it probably happens as well, someone marries several types of saws together, Johnny Cash's song "I Got It One Piece at a Time" just started playing in my head. Hope you can block it off somehow.

If the valve is trash with no hope of repair, you could weld or braze or? it shut and use it for a plug.

I've had my share of that crap on other brands as well.My problem is that sometimes I don't know when to call it quits.I guess I have the mentality of a dr."save, save, save"LOL

Much easier to do what CLASEC & Leon said:go to the hardware store & get a plug to fit.On the 450 there's no decompression valve, that saw is 74 cc.I don't understand why they put a decomp.valve on the 902,that saw is 77 cc.Only 3 cc.difference.I really saw a good one when I got an old Monkey Wards featherweight, that saw was around 33 cc & they put a decomp.valve on that! Talk about a bunch of wooses.I can see putting a decomp valve on a saw when it gets up around 85 - 90 cc.Heck,my 540 doesn't have a decomp.valve on it (to my knowledge) & that saw is 88 cc!

Some of the 40cc Super EZ Autos had decompression valves as well. I would not be surprised if the 540 and newer model saws had automatic decompression valve built in.

I'll see if I can get a pic on here tomorrow of the dercomp.valve still in the saw with the top of the valve stem bent over.I took it out of the saw earlier & put it in a vise & tried to straighten the stem, but it'll never be right where it'll work properly again. In order to get the decomp.valve out of the saw I had to loosen the carb.bolts & take them out, then I had to take the oil lines off the oiler piston, then I had to take the mounting screws out of the oiler .That was to just take the decomp.valve out of the hole where it was mounted. What a royal pain.I hope I can get it all back together again where it'll work again.

Now I'm stuck between a rock & a hard place.Do I have a 902,or a 903?Do I get parts for a 902,or a 903? The saw had the decomp.valve on it,but it was missing the throttle lock assembly - I ordered that from Leon yesterday, but he didn't have the pin for it,only the bushing, spring,& e-clip.I bought the pin on Ebay yesterday. The saw was also missing the linkage arm as well,I didn't find that at Leon's,or Ebay.So I decided to just eliminate the decomp.valve entirely by plugging it.Once again I got ther pic on Flickr, but unable to get it on here.

I may have a linkage arm. If you want me to look for it let me know.

I'd like to keep the saw as original as I could,so yeah,if you can dig it up I'd greatly appreciate it.My son used to visit his mom & step dad when they lived down in Bemis Point. We only live a couple hrs.from each other.

You probably have a Super XL-902, way different than a XL-902am. I would work off the Super manual from Leons
