Oh yeah, forgot to mention that it cost £10, about $15!!! Thus allowing £££ for the renovation.

Thankyou both. I have the saw stripped down into many boxes-neatly labeled of course! Am grateful for someone else doing the sameThankfully the piston & bore appear in good order. Some light pitting on the crankshaft where one main bearing has sat for a while, but not too bad. There's nothing serious missing, mostly screws. Fuel/oil oil lines rotten. The oil tank is full of sawdust gunge! There is a hole in the top corner of the gas tank (how the do you do that?). Not sure how I'll repair that yet-Anyone confirm is is Aluminium and not magnesium (before I set it on fire). Should both gaps on the piston rings be aligned, or set at opposite sides of the piston? Mine are both in the same place, which seems silly. Have begun stripping & prepping for painting.

Should both gaps on the piston rings be aligned, or set at opposite sides of the piston? Mine are both in the same place, which seems silly. You car mechanic all think the same Two-cycle engines have to keep the ring ends from passing any port or guess what would happen The piston should have a pin of some sort to keep the rings from rotating and when you mount the piston on the rod, make sure you have this pin orientated correctly with the cylinder wall. And BTW, a typical ring end gap is .070" ;D

You car mechanic all think the same Funny you'd say that - my dad is a car mechanic. There is a locating pin for each ring and an "line up with exhaust" mark on piston. Jonathan

There is a hole in the top corner of the gas tank (how the do you do that?). Not sure how I'll repair that yet-Anyone confirm is is Aluminium and not magnesium (before I set it on fire). The tank is made from magnesium, so will refrain from getting it too hot, though big pieces are less likely to burn. Would like to braze/weld it rather than glue it. Apparently one can tell by putting a drop of normal fish-&-chip vinegar on a fresh surface & if it bubbles it's magnesium-aluminium wont have any reaction.

Today tried to fill hole with "special" alumium-type brazing rod (Google HTS-2000 for type of rod") which works well on aluminium. Unfortunately the melting point of the tank must be very close to the rod & I ended up melting the hole a little bit bigger, not much though luckily. Guess I'll epoxy it up instead, and long term look for a new one.

I had the same problem using aluminum brazing rods. They seem OK on aluminum but the magnesium has a lower melting point and I couldn't get them to work. I don't have gas for my wire feed but my try doing some later this year.

Alright! Back together this morning & after a lot of huffing & puffing it burst into life. Holy cow this has some power (I've only used small "consumer" saws up till now.) Just waiting for a few small bits before can mount a bar, and will have to go back & Loctite some screws as quite a few came loose after only a couple of minutes running.
Days like this make it all worthwhile ;D
