Any idea on the coating Homelite used for the red and green handles? It looks thicker than just paint

It is a vinyl coating put on similar to paint. I have no idea how it could be replicated short of a big operation. Although it is possible it might be dipped at home. It normally requires special equipment to spray. We make the guns and pumps at work.

I wonder if there is a coating like flex seal that may work? They always show dipping handles of tools in it

Maybe a place that sprays on bed liners could do something like a handle in vinyl.

I do work at Graco. The dipping is tricky on a curved part as the stuff has to be thick and then it wants to sag off the bottom. The handle bar would likely need to be turned constantly while it dried, and that might be a very long time unless it was in an oven.

The bed liner stuff is so thick it goes on in lumps, to give traction. That might be alright on a saw but the Homelite stuff I have seen was all smooth. Maybe the roll/brush on stuff would work. I have never seen it in green metallic though...

You could probably use plasti dip clear and tint it to what color you wanted, and spray it on.

It takes a special base to add tint to. This is not paint. They actually have a clear base, you can create custom colors to by adding pigment. Their are kits available online, but I haven't tried them.

Just looked them up. Among other things, they used to make chainsaw scabbards. The kit comes with enough pigments to mix colors. It might be worth it to contact them and maybe get a formula to match the colors we need. Something like a turkey roasting pan might work to dip, and a grill rotisserie to keep it turning till dry. Worth looking into.

I called their customer service and the girl said you could try to mix and match the color buy eye with one of the kits. Or, you could get the clear, and take a sample of the green handlebar to a paint shop, and have them match the color, and then mix it with the clear. Of course I didn't have a pen handy so I forgot what type of paint she said to use. If you want to give this a try give them a call with pen handy. She said that you would probably apply several coats with a paint brush, it is self leveling. Make sure the first coat is dry. If the base coat is still tacky and you brush on the second coat, it may leave deep stroke marks that won't come out, Joe.

Consider shrink tubing. Available in a variety of colors, I used black on an EZ (small one). Looks perfect. Green is available as well.
Double it if you want a thicker grip. It does come in various thicknesses, but the larger sizes are typically thin wall.
It typically shrinks to half it's original diameter, select a size large enough to negotiate the curves, and it will shrink down nicely. Slow, even heating to prevent wrinkles particularly at the curves.

I really want to match the light green (or red) original color and thickness to bring it back to as close to original as possible, one of my saws is bare and Walterg has shown a good method to buff these out. Not to change the subject, but the spongy handles on the later saws were nice, but honestly none of the saws whether they are bare or have grips seem to bother me as far as vibration is concerned.

Lowe's website says they carry (not all stores) the Plasti-dip base coat and six tint colors to custom make your own color. I'm going to try this
