As far as actually creating a library. Hmmm...Im questioning the ability to simply create a portion within the forum and then upload each ipl under a "thread" of the saws name. Now, if that is not possible, im just trying to think of a place (like the photoshack idea) where you can upload data files and then link out to the external site. Maybe rbw has a better idea of what can be done as he's pretty handy with all this computer stuff. I see this as the biggest problem too. Organization is key to maintaining these things so they can be useable. A little while back I posted some spec sheets, and the only way I knew to present them was via new posts. Host the pics on photobucket and then add new posts. Big problem is posts are flat... no heirarchy, so how to group things gets to be a problem. I love modular decomposition. Break stuff down and throw it in related pots. Not sure how to implement this via a forum. Dan

Sorry if I added confusion OldZip. I was commenting about the pics I posted for the spec sheets. I was just emphasizing the lack of heirarchy and organization in the "post" method of putting out info. Hope I didn't sound like I meant using pics for the IPLs.
I'm neutral here though on the format for IPLs. As long as they're readable, it doesn't matter if they're pdf, jpg, bmp, png, or whatever. Organization is what's important in my book. Being able to locate the one you're looking for without hunting for 5 minutes.... that's a biggy in my book.

How about this idea to gets this project started - Locate the IPLs that are in good to great shape.
- Get them scanned into PDF
- Put a post on the site of what is available
- Use email to get them to out to those who need one for a current project.
In the mean time, we can do some digging around for online storage.

In the mean time, we can do some digging around for online storage. I agree this would get something started. The question that keeps coming up in my mind though is where would we be after doing this if no storage option is found? Here's my perspective... no denying its nice to have REAL, genuine, original paper copies of an IPL. Its not as nice, but still pretty dog-gone handy to have access in either printed, or online-digital format an IPL (post scanned) that is readable. Key point here is, once again, readable! At this point, it doesn't matter if it "looks" like its an orignal paper copy or not. I don't have a problem with a cleaned up, sterile, black and white, obviosly digitally doctored document, just as long as its easily readable. OK, so where am I going with this.... I guess the point is that most of us already have IPLs in some form or other. When someone comes along and requests an IPL, some of us will accomadate and send one. The whole idea is to get them consolidated here at the House. If there's not a way to host and put them up for easy access, then the idea is pretty much dead from the get-go. It won't be any siginificant improvment over what we're already doing. Only difference is there may be some additional scanned docs that start floating around that may look different. So that's my take. If we can't come up with something along the lines of the chainsawr site where you can click and download then we'll still just end up emailing scanned docs which we do already. I made two scans of the same page of a 925 IPL that is used and has some dirty marks from handling in the shop. I was going to post them but Image Shack won't accept a PDF so Iwill just describe them.
Scan #1 was made at 300 dpi Black and White with Text Enhancement enable and is 132K in size. It is good except the dirty areas are more pronounced. If the page would have been clean this would be a good setting.
Scan #2 was made at 300 dpi Grey Scale with Text Enhancement enabled and is 639K. It looks nice and the dirty marks are less pronounced. This would be good for pages that are not new or near new.
The IPL is 8 pages and at 132Kper page it would be 1 meg. but at 639K is gets quite large - 5.1 meg. I'm going to make two scans of the entire IPL. If you want one to look at, PM me.

Here's a test for sharing the EZ service manual...
Its a little over 7 meg I think. This stuff looks like it'll work. Now just need to come up with a structure for how to arrange the stuff in a post. Dan

I tried to use the picture to "Save Link As" but it downloads as a .PHP file and then I can't open it. Might work best to go to keepandshare and let people download from there.

Just click on it A7. It'll open a new window and download the file in the new window. Then you can save it or whatever.

OK... This doesn't really belong with IPLs, but I'm about to bust to put these out for sharing. OldZip, feel free to organize later as you see fit. Dan

Dan, You didn't "share" the EZ manual so nobody can view it or download it. While we learn how this site works, you should test what you place out there by accessing it from another browser. I created "homelite" using firefox and then used IE to test the access. The site places cookie in your cookie jar so you have to use a different browser to test.
