I have an XL-800 that I have not been able to get running. It will start after a few pulls, idles rough, and then dies. I have rebuilt the carburetor and replaced the piston. Any other suggestions of what might be the issue?
Thanks.

Have you replaced the fuel line & filter yet?If you have then that'll be it for the fuel end of things. The next thing you might want to do is pull the flywheel & clean the points. I just got my XL-800AM up & running in the last few weeks.I had to replace the fuel line & filter, rebuild the carb & replace the coil wire.

I have replaced the fuel lines and filter. I also replaced the coil wire. I looked at the points while I had it a part to replace the piston, they seemed okay. I was wondering if I should just get all neew points and condenser for it.
Thanks.

Not necessary at this point.A lot of times you can just clean the points up & reset the gap & they'll be good as new.If that doesn't work, then try the new points & condenser.People have many different ways of cleaning up the points.I like to take them right out of the points box so I can see them better.I also like to use emery cloth to clean them as the emery cloth leaves less grit than sandpaper.Other folks use a points file.If the cleaning of the points doesn't work, then go for a new set. When you're finished cleaning use a piece of register tape (clean,no ink) & drag it in between the points to remove any grit & oily residue that may be present. There'll be a felt in the points box (there should be),add ONE drop of light oil to the felt.
