So it appears that one of the c-clips came out and did a fair amount of damage to the piston but thankfully not the cylinder 🙄 I went and bit the bullet and paid $91(tax&shipping) for the feebay nos piston and I'm going to hone the cylinder. It came with rings but I ordered 2 from Leon JIC, I'm a hack with rings. Hey it's only money and I can't take it with me!

Gently with the rings and you will have a spare set for many years.

I really am a Mongo when it comes to rings.

Yikes! I've seen damage from that happening here and there. Does a nasty job for sure. Glad you were able to source parts quickly though.

So I flushed out the crankcase and kept an eye out for any debris from the c-clip but nothing was found. I soaked the bearings with oil hoping to coax anything out but again nothing and the bearings are running smooth so hopefully it was pulverized and passed. This is the worst it has.

So I installed the new piston but need to wait on the flex-hone this week. I scuffed the cylinder and it appears that it has good compression so hopefully it'll be better after the honing. Can I scuff the exhaust ports lightly to clean them up?

CRAP! So I took care to oil the piston and cylinder prior to reassembly, I honed the cylinder and buffed the exhaust ports and used the proper tools to mount the cylinder and I still have two scratches on the piston. I checked everything out and made sure everything was smooth.

Would it have been possible thatthe C clip got stuck to the top of the cylinder & you didn't catch it?I've seen this with needle bearings on both an XL-400 & an SEZ.

No I unfortunately didn't notice a small piece of carbon from the exhaust port. I had to remove 1/2 of the protective coating from around the coil due to it being damaged by heat. I cut it out cleaned with alcohol and reapplied some high temp silicon to protect it from heat and moisture.
