Do any of you know where to get a diagram that shows the inside of the starter assembly? I found a 1/2" washer floating around and I have no idea where it came from. I think it goes on the end of the shaft on the center of the pulley. Is there a washer that goes inside the bushing spring ( or spring bushing, whatever it's called ). Man it's hard to get that pulley on and not interfere with the spring coming too close to the pulley. Any ideas on how this crap goes together? Thanks, fellas. Hot Ajax

To onlyhomelites ( administrator ): thanks for posting.
There are two issues I am having. Does part number 7 ( on page 2 ) fit inside part number 6, also on page 2?
When I tighten the screw that holds the pulley in the starter assembly, (parts 1 and 2) the pulley won't turn. Wrong washer? Missing part?
Thanks a lot for providing this info, starting to see where the problems are. It's a labor of love to keep this saw going, but it was my late pop's saw, I use it, and I want to keep it going if I can. Besides, it's got some raw power, and none of that silly stuff the gov makes you put on it now. Hotajax
PS: Don't you love the price of 35 cents?

Part #7 should fit inside #6, but only if it's still all original. If part #6 has been changed out to the nylon/plastic spring lock, part#6 is no longer used.
If you still have the steel lock, one side has a machined area for the spacer ring to fit into. The washer under the screw head should be just slightly smaller than the ID of the pulley. Before you even put the washer into the pulley, it should be visibly evident that the pulley is sitting just a bit lower than the top of the center post.
This video on my channel goes through a late model starter that has the plastic lock...but the principles of how it goes together are the same:

To Onlyhomelites:
Fantastic video. I'm almost there. Questions:
Can you just replace the metal lock with the plastic part, or can you only do that with certain models?
I have the old metal version that has not been changed out to the plastic part. What is the plastic part called that replaces the steel lock and the spacer that goes inside it?
How do you get that 1/2" spacer to stay inside the lock while you attach the pulley to the housing? Use some heavy grease to hold it in there?
My saw just has the spring, no cover over it. And I think that is the problem. It starts popping up on the outer edges and makes it hard to seat the pulley.
What is the name of your channel?
Great video. Hope you remembered to pick up those groceries for the Mrs.
Thanks, really indebted to you. Means a lot to me to keep the old man's saw going. Jake

It's called a recoil spring lock, part# 94827. If the steel ring/washer at the bottom of the center post is removable, then the plastic piece can be used. You shouldn't need grease...the steel spacer at the bottom of the post goes on, then the spring lock drops onto that and it should stay centered, allowing the formed end on the rope drum to drop into the lock. A missing spring shield isn't great...I would buy one and add it to the assembly. My channel is the same as my website, Leons' Chainsaw Parts & Repair

I have a nylon spring shield that goes at the very bottom. Looks like it's in pretty good shape.
I took the who assembly apart again, and removed the spring. Then I put the pulley on and tightened that screw to make sure I can still pull on it, and it moves easily. Looks like the major problem was the old bare spring. I think over the years that thing was so knotted up so many times that it's not usable anymore. So I'll replace it with a new spring that comes in the cassette. That should do it.
Do you have the nylon washer for the pull cord? I know I saw the spring on your site. Thanks Leon, I could not have gotten this info anywhere else. Much appreciated. JF
