Just finished replacing a pulley and starter rope on a XL-2. It does seem to fit very well into the pulley and binds a bit at the last few inches during retraction. Maybe the rope just needs to “train” a bit and use it a few times......
Possibly the rope is a bit too thick? I think it’s 3mm diameter but it’s a bit difficult to get an accurate measurement.
What is the proper starter rope for these little guys?

The size and length is listed in the IPL.

I think the rope I have is just a bit too thick then fossil. It doesn’t have any diameter measurements on the package, just length. It was a cheapo Home depot item branded as a Briggs lawnmower cord. It looked pretty darn close but just a tad too thick ...I’ll have to add a proper starter rope to the list the next time I go to the shop!
Thanks!

The size and length is listed in the IPL. I never even thought to check the IPL... thanks! I was using the service book. It is pretty vague on starter rope servicing. Leon’s video was really helpful though. He made spring replacement look some easy! I fumbled with putting the old one back in after cleaning it for about an hour! Lots a swearing!!!

I just finished putting the new rope on the XL-2. I tried to use the 34” of #4 as listed on the IPL but that rope is a bit too thick to get the full length to wrap around the spool and fit down in the starter cover.
Possibly the 34” they specify gives you room to cut and tie each end and still have enough to pull the saw.
I wanted a bit more rope on the spool so I went with the #3.5 rope at 48”. It fits perfect and has plenty of pulling range now.
