Recent acquisition +UT:50112 ( SUPER XL-922 W ) DOM:1980 , has revealed a pleasant surprise.
It has an oval port cylinder, making it an 82 cc version. Appears all original, never been apart before.
A full disassembly and inspection is in the works... not leaving anything to chance.

Some initial findings , it's in need of some TLC . Transfer port edges are sharp with burs chromed over , possibly caused what's seen on the piston . I'll let the pic's tell the story ..(click to enlarge) .

Those marks don't look too bad to me, not deep. How was the compression before you took it apart?

The ring landings look good...I wonder if the wrist pin bearing is a bit loose letting it "wobble" a bit?

The ring landings look good...I wonder if the wrist pin bearing is a bit loose letting it "wobble" a bit? Wrist pin bearing seems to have some excessive play, I'll definitely be replacing anything that doesn't meet my spec's . Crankshaft end-play is also excessive at .026" , crank can move that amount on the inner race of the ball bearing . I'm still in the process of removing the crank, from the crankcase, to investigate further . Must be one of those saws where parts were cast/machined (cylinder ..etc) on a late Friday afternoon , then assembled on an early Monday morning , nonetheless now on the healing table to have any flaws corrected .

Drive-side ball bearing easily slid off the crankshaft , revealing a polished surface on the race and crank . End-play was uncontrolled , allowing contact of the crankshaft to the backing-plate roller bearing race... creating a nice lapping compound for the internals .

That sounds pretty nasty! The counterweight was rubbing the backing plate? What’s the plan for fixing that? New crank & roller bearings?

Not so great, glad you found it. Crank must be under size, bearings are usually withing a few millionths.

Many moons later .... nearing completion. All new bearings, crank seals, piston rings, etc.

Beautiful work! And nice J557 cable-that haven't been made in a long time. That's going to be one nice running SXL!

View AttachmentView AttachmentHow many of the 922 models were made at 82cc disclcement? Was this original from the factory?

It is a factory original 82cc. Cylinder is the same oval port as used in the SUPER XL-925, the piston differs in that it's the thick ring piston as used in the VI-955. Currently UT:50112 is the only known 82cc SUPER XL-922, but there are still some UT numbers left to be discovered. I've seen other examples of this same model. Tinman had one that he was working on for BBR.

So there were some SXL-922's that weren't 82cc? I figured given their vintage they were all 82cc from the factory. I'm sure many were changed over to the rectangular exhaust port cylinder in later years after the original piston and cylinder burned up.
But after 40 years, I'm still learning!
