Is there a proper way to orient the piston rings, my new Homelite 2000 rings have a very small bevel on the outside. Does this bevel go up or does it go down?

In car engines, the bevel goes down. No idea about 2 cycles, have not run into that one.
Welcome to the House of Homelite.
Hang on a minute, someone who is sure will show up to help.

Thanks guys, I had to utilize a magnifying glass to see the bevel but it is definately there and the inside is a sharp 90 deg.

Well that is pretty clear.
Of course the assembly Dot is the opposite of car rings where the Dot (a dimple really, it is concave) always shows the top side! I wonder if this could be any more contrary. Let's hope it is the same on Homelites.

I stand corrected...that explanation makes sense!

That is certainly true and I believe the second (wiper) ring goes taper up on a 4 stroke application. I am not sure why the Mac is "up" on the top and it may have something to do with oil retention on the cylinder wall. I can't really find anything that explains the process 4 stroke and 2 stroke. I was wondering if there was anything in the service bulletins about that. I think it would be good to ask the first lady of Homelite. Joyce may know. chainsawlady

Thank you for the diagram fossil, if there was a dot or any other indication of direction it has been long gone. I have literally thousands of hours on this old horse after nearly 40 years of logging and firewood gathering. I have visited so many sites with multiple explanations my head is spinning and have been tempted to roll the dice and choose one of three possible scenarios but after 6 months of restoration work will choose the path of patience. I will the and get a pic of the little devil and post. Thank you everyone else for your interest.
