I am contemplating getting all of my parts blasted and repainting. I acquired a bunch of NOS parts to replace cracked and damaged pieces but some of them must be from different eras and the paint is a bit off. It’s too bad because they are in perfect condition....just looks bad.
The saw is an XL-130. I think I’ll have to split the gas tank from the crankcase in order to properly strip and repaint. What do you do with the inside of the tank? I assume you would not want to paint it along with everything else but do you need to protect it from the blasting or refinish it with sons protection after blasting?
Can you Moto Seal the two tanks back together if the seal rips?

I think some of the Homelites (at least the Terry saws) came with miss matched paint. I asked Joyce about the red paint and she indicated there were a lot of different shades.
Leave the inside of the tank alone. It's fine bare. They aren't hard to get off the crankcase. If you decide to blast, go to Lowes and get rubber stoppers that fit the tank fill hole and the fuel line pass through. I think I would contact cement a piece of rubber over the fill hole gasket surface as well.
I'm not sure what kind of blast media people use for mag saws.

I use glass bead for cleaning off the cases mag or aluminum. no matter how good you mask off you want to clean the heck out of everything after blasting. Clean it blow it all out then do it a few more times that blast media gets into every nook and cranny and you do not want that inside a saw. I would say the tank should be fine bare unless you have bad oxidization worst comes to worst you can redkote it.
just my 2 cents

That great information! Thanks. I know diddly squat about blasts and painting. I’ll have to pay someone to do it. At least know I will know a bit before showing up w

At least know I will know a bit before showing up w If you pay someone to do it, make sure they completely understand WHAT you want done and HOW you want it done. I've heard too many stories of people taking their stuff to a blaster and the blaster messes it up. Invest in a blast cabinet and a decent compressor....you'd be surprised how fast it pays for itself. A good starting point is Harbor Freight.

Yeah. That’s not exactly the end result that I’m personally envisioning. I think I’ll re-evaluate my next step here. Blasting and repainted every part may not be totally necessary for my saw. I think I’ll do a test with an old junk part first with some of that Victory Ted to see how well it will match up to the NOS parts that actually match. It’s just the drive cover that is more orange than the rest. Ripping everything down just to make one part for may be a bad decision.
Back to the drawing board....

Take the saw to a paint shop. As long as they have a hand held scanner and can scan a flat surface on the saw, they should be able to match the color perfectly.

I use aluminum oxide for my blasting and it works well without doing damage.

New plan of action for the XL130. Buy an NOS drive case that matches the other colours(Hopefully. That’s gotta be cheaper than paying someone to blast the whole saw. Then buy a can or two of primer and two or three cans of paint.
I have a newly acquired XL-12 that might be a good candidate for total tear down and restore. I have some homework to do!
