Recently I’ve had the task of basically setting up the maintenance/machine shop for a large department in an even larger industrial facility. When I say set up I mean from scratch as in a brand new facility. When compared to other vendors such as Grainger and MSC, McMaster Carr has a much more user friendly and accurate website. Items are much easier to find. I’ve looked up items on Grainger and the pic not coincide with the description and the when the item arrived it wasn’t the same as either the picture or description

I will say Grainger recently blew me away. I had purchased a drill/mill combo made by Jet. Not my choice I pushed for Bridgeport but some engineers and accounting department pushed otherwise. After much debate we got the Jet. In higher speeds it’s sounded like it had gravel in the head. We called and Jet said that’s normal for a direct drive. We found a comparable Dayton that sounded much better that our die shop had purchased. I requested a return on the Jet and grainger did a full refund the next day and said scrap the Jet they didn’t want it back and couldn’t sell it again. It was a $4300 machine.

McMaster is my first choice. I had a situation where I needed a handle extension for a ball valve that they carried. They did not sell the extension so I called them, in two hours I had a very reasonable quote and I had the parts I needed the next day. That on a part they did not sell! And I agree that their web site is far superior to any other I have used, especially Grainger. I avoid Grainger even though they have a warehouse located about 10 miles from me, McMaster is 400 miles away. If you need something, call them on the phone, they are great.

I used to order from the Big 3 at work and agree that McMaster Carr is the gold standard. I still go to them for personal purchases from time to time and get treated as if I'm still buying thousands of dollars in merchandise a year from them.
