I have a Homelite 14 in 33cc Chain Saw Model UT10901B that is a few years old. It has been difficult to start recently and would only run when constantly pumpming and pulling the trigger. Now it won't start at all. I've never worked on a chain saw before, but I performed the following steps according to the manual: cleaned the air filter and pre-filter; checked the spark arrester screen; cleaned the spark plug and confirmed that there is spark; used new gas with 50:1 ratio; cleaned the saw as much as possible; topped off the bar oil reservoir. I could hear something rattling around near the handle and checked in the fuel tank. The fuel filter was rolling around. I don't know how to tell if it needs to be replaced. I reconnected the fuel filter to the longer of the two fuel lines in the the tank. The shorter of the two lines just seems to hang in the tank - only connected at one end - is this correct? The plate that the carburetor mounts to is loose - it appears that one of the screws is stripped - could this be causing an air leak? The manual makes references to the H and L jets - but cautions that these should only be adjusted by a Homelite Service Center. Is it possible that I need a carberator rebuild?
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Minihal

Hello minihal, The longer line was the proper one for the filter. The shorter one should only be the return line from the primer bulb. If the saw was running ok until recently, then you 'probly' dont need a carb rebuild, or to mess with the Hi-Lo screws at this point. I think the filter falling off is the culprit here. Not to forget the carb mounting problem tho. Take a look at the pic and tell us if the problem item is 14, 15, or 9.

OldZip - thanks for the reply.
The loose carb plate is #12 in the the diagram; the screw that seems to be stripped is the upper right hand #14. Since the fuel filter was disconnected from the fuel line, is it possible that the carb got clogged up with some debris?

Minihal, You have the honor of getting my 400th post!!! Part 12 is screwed directly to the cylinder, if the screw appears to be stripped then my guess is that the tapped hole in the cylinder is stripped. Dissassmebly of the saw is probably the the first step. then a heli-coil thread repair, or drill and tap the hole to next size screw. Be careful when drilling the aluminum is a soft metal. Here is a picture of the manifold and cylinder on a 38cc version of that saw. CSW

Chainsawwhisperer, Thanks for the 400th post; sorry for the delay in responding - I'm trying to figure out how to attach some pictures to show you what I found. I went ahead and started to disassemble the saw and found two problems. 1) the gasket (#11) between the cylinder and the carb plate (#12) was in bad shape - the bottom half of the gasket was missing. 2) the screw that I thought was stripped was actually twisted off - I guess that was my fault. I took the saw to my local machine shop and the old fellow that owns the shop said it should be no problem for him to remove the broken piece from the cylinder and he'll give me a new screw. Next I'll have to find a new gasket - there's a mower repair shop nearby that works on Homelites, so they might have it. I'll post again when I get it reassembled and let you know if it starts/runs. Looks like you found the problem! Good luck . Let us know how it works out. My father does not cut much any more, and his 2 saws are
getting a bit heavy for him, so about 2 years ago he was looking
for a light weight saw. I gave a 33cc Homie that I had kicking
around, he loves it! I had opened up the exhaust and retuned
the carb, and put a better chain on it. It's a screamer.
