Hi, my dad has an ST-155 that he has not run for several years, stored with the fuel tank drained. I put a new plug in, cleaned the air filter, and checked the spark arrestor screen in the muffler and it is clear. Put new fuel in the tank, it will start and run on full choke for a few seconds then dies. Tried multiple times with the same results. Is it worth taking to a repair shop, or should I buy a new weed eater for my dad. It appears to be in good condition other than not being able to keep it running. Thanks.

I have an ST-145 which is very similar to the ST-155. They are good trimmers. Lightweight and good power.
You are inevitably dealing with carburetor issues. Likely the diaphragms have gotten hard as a result of sitting and/or ethanol fuel. This is not allowing the carburetor to move fuel efficiently which is why it only runs with full choke.
A carb rebuild kit will be less than $10. I wouldn't imagine it would be more than an hour labor even including R&I in a shop. If you're handy it can be done at home with just basic tools, there are a lot of how tos on here and youtube.
Whether its worth fixing would be up to you and your dad, really depends on what he wants to do with it and what hes willing to spend on it.

Thank You, Rowdy. I have never tried to repair a carburetor, but for less than $10.00 for a kit, what can it hurt to try it? Thanks again.

The ST-155 has two carburetor possibilities listed on the IPL 17968... A Zama or Walbro(WT-71). Verify which carburetor is on the trimmer to ensure getting the correct rebuild kit. Perhaps a preliminary inspection of the carburetor internals will reveal the source of the problem, fuel that has evaporated often leaves a varnish/shellac residue that can clog the inlet screen, ports, etc.
Looking at your profile you've been a member since 2010, and your dad must be in his eighties.
Good luck with it Glen ! Post any questions you may have. We're here to help.

You are correct, he is 87, he has slowed down, but still enjoys doing his yard work. I usually do the trimming while he mows with his riding mower. I'm not sure when he purchased his Homelite weed eater, and he doesn't remember either, but he always tried to maintain his equipment.

If you post the serial number, we can tell you when the trimmer was made.
