I just scored a mint C-51 at my Stihl dealer for $30, all the decals are still on and it is in great shape, I was told it had not been run in several years. I got it home and primed the carb and got her running, I love old Homies. So clue me in, what does "convertible drive" mean? can it be changed from direct drive to gear drive? Are these saws rare at all? Thanks for the help.

Bingo. Thats exactly what it means. These saws had the capability to be converted from direct drive to gear drive with the use of a planetary gearing unit. However these gear units are quite rare and fetch a very high price when you find one (one sold the other day on ebay for 250 dollars for just the gear drive unit - no saw). As far as rarity a C-51 is not all that rare, there are several around. But 30 bucks is a steal for one. Nice score. and welcome to the House of Homelite!

Hey man, Didn't I just answer this on the 'other'site!! Welcome to HOH, Lotta knowledgeable folks here. CSW
This is what I wrote, Maybe you missed it.
I have a C-5 convertable Drive. The saw was easy to 'convert' to gear drive. I think it was as simple as removing the side cover and the clutch drum, and replacing them with the 'gear drive' side cover (and clutch Drum?) I think that the gear unit used planetaries for reduction. There pretty rare. I've only seen pictures. CSW

Yes you did see me on the "other" site. I am primarily a Stihl man but I still love the old Homies I have a C9, a Wiz and this C-51, all up and running. I love the shake and the sound!

That is a good picture Bill, I presume you take the direct drive sprocket off and use that clutch cover to get the gear reduction? So if you found a C-51 with that cover the cover is worth way more than the saw? Thanks for the information.

Would that cover be from an XL15 Bill? Yes and no. That cover came on a SXL. It should be the same as the one on the Xl-15. I have the same cover in blue also. Bill
