Couple weeks ago I happened on a CL add not too far away for a guy with 50 or so saws, lots of Homelites, looked like the dregs of a shop that went out of business, but claimed some ran. Lots of XL-12's, Super XL's and such in the picture. Figured I could get a couple parts saws cheap and maybe a runner for a friend. He was a bit pricey but I walked away with an XL-12 that looked like a junkyard dog but was complete and had a 20" bar on it and an EZ Automatic that was questionable at best but just couldn't leave it behind. Couple parts in a bag too.
Anyway, the EZ automatic has a "Type" number & Serial number. Don't think I've seen that before. At first I thought it was a 7 digit serial so I went to Joyce's records to see what I could find and things didn't add up. Looked at the tag again and figured the 9 at the end of the Type # was actually the first digit in the serial# just stamped off the appropriate field. Go back to Joyce's records and there are only two serial numbers starting with a 9, that do fall into the 1969-1971 years when the EZ Auto was produced and they are for EZ type saws. Found it interesting that the numbers went from 1's & 2's at the start and skipped up to 9 out of nowhere but only for a couple records. This along with a "type" number mean anything interesting in the lineage?

The “9” is part of the serial number. This was right at the time Homelite was transitioning to the eight digit serial number and as you can see, eight digits don’t quite fit in the tag. This is also right at the time they started using a UT number on the saw. Before this time, the ID tag style were usually unique to the saw, and later all the tags were the same across all models.

Nice find ! *UT: 10104 ( EZ-AO ) SN: 91680854 ..DOM; Tuesday, June 16th, of 1969, unit 854, last year built '71 Thanks. It is unfortunately a bit on the beat up side and when I pulled the muffler to check the piston/cylinder, they are both toast. Not sure if it's worth rebuilding or just keep it for parts. I took it thinking maybe some of the parts would fit a Super EZ I have a lot more faith in. For now, it's on a shelf in the back of the basement.
