Ok, I'm new here. Not new to saws or forums, but this is my first old saw and first Homelite.
I pulled to far and now the recoil won't rewind. I have the thing half apart. The spool is off, but I can't seem to get the spring housing or shroud off and figure how and where the spring catches to get tension?
I am looking through the manuals now, I downloaded the 3rd edition manual that I hope may cover this procedure but any help would be appreciated here.

Ok I figured it out from looking at it. The spring was just holding it on. I just pushed it back out of the way kind of and got the whole thing off, then realized the hook on th end was broken off which was why it wouldn't work. I then figured out how to pry the spring holder cover off with the spring in it. I was looking at the IPL and see there is an old number that was superceded by a new number as noted in the notes. It says if new spring is used a different starter hub mayvneed to be used. It does not give a serial # cut off though? How do I know if I have an older model? I found the original part for sale, not the new part number one. Question is if I have the new model starter hub thing will the old original spring fit in ether setup? Anyway to tell what I have on there now?

What parts list are you using? The EZ6 had several different parts lists depending on where it was made, as Homelite was in a transition period. Post your serial number and the number of your parts list to see if it’s the correct one.

Serial # 752465
The original # is 71470-A and it says that 56497 supercedes it.
I was going to post a picture of the IPL I have, but maybe I haven't been a member long enough? I don't see where to add one?
I got it off Leon's saw repair or something website for Homelite. He had a huge list of IPLS for all the Homelite models it looked like.

So I need to stay with the original spring? Sounds like if I do not have all those replacement parts the new spring with the end double loop will not work. But if I assume the original spring did not have that double loop on the outside, and the spring on my saw now has the double loop I have the new style? The hub in it does have a cammed indention for the spring to engage to and the rest is smooth. There still is a pin in the pulley, but maybe it's a see shorter style or something that does not engage the spring itself or maybe the pin that is not needed is not there and originally there were 2?? That service bulliten was helpful and detailed but does not help me know if I have old or new parts....Unless I am onto something about that double loop on the spring. Thanks for the help you guys are providing .

Ok I read the first TSB that you posted second. I see the correct IPL and it lists the "older" spring. So unless I have the double looped end in mine and it was converted I should have the 7.....-A numbered spring in my saw.

Yes, you should be able to look at your spring, (or what’s left of it) and determine if you have the old or new style. Parts are still available for both styles.

Yes I did just what you said, and I had come to realize. I have the old style. Thanks for all the help and documents. I know more now than I ever thought I would on the recoil system of this 60 year old saw. Now if I had just dug into the ball bearing system. I will save that for another day. Haha.
