I would think it would be okay to run one of these series saws without the air deflector or small air filter behind the carb. The saw I just acquired has it but it is in terrible condition, deteriorating down to the wire mesh inside. I have come up dry looking for one but is it really necessary?

John,I've heard of quite a few guys using foam material on filter frames where the filter is NLA.Put up a pic so we can see if it's doable. Ed

Foam really wouldn't be an option. The deflector stands up behind the intake of the carburetor and its under the air filter. I'm not sure that it is so much as another filter or if it has another design intent. It would be hard to make foam work with the bracket the deflector is molded to.

I guess I'd have to look at an IPL to see what you're talking about.I have an XL-800 & never noticed anything different about that compared to my XL-400,but I didn't really mess with it that much. It's another "project" down the road.Lol Ed

I’m just afraid to use this one the way it is breaking down I’m quite sure it would end up going through the carb. I might run across one one day
