okay i got two sets of retainer clips, just wondering which ones i use on which side of the piston and trying to confirm that the pins in the ring groove go toward the exhaust side or not. not sure what the square flat washers are, maybe for the handle. thanks

The pin in the ring grooves goes away from the exhaust as does the open end of the wrist pin. Not sure about the retainer rings.

Different saws have different pin retainers, I don't know about yours. If the groove is fit to the retainer, it will matter a lot. You do not want the retainer to come up under power.

Is this a aftermarket piston? Is this your first piston install?

Is this a aftermarket piston? Is this your first piston install? yes it is my first piston install. it is an aftermarket lil red barn piston and NOS cylinder. i checked to make sure the piston pin holes weren't drilled through to the inside. i coated the inside of the new cylinder lightly with oil as well as the rings. I put a drop on the wrist pin and connecting rod bearing. i used the wire clips on both ends and have the cylinder over the piston and cylinder bolts installed and tight.

I have a LRB piston for a 550, but I haven't installed it yet. It may sound simple, but it all goes together only one way. The rod cap should be installed the way you found it, they are not meant to be reversible. The closed end of the wrist pin should be facing towards the exhaust. The piston ring pins go away from the exhaust.
Homelite pistons have a solid ring on the exhaust side and a snap ring on the intake side.

Then I take it you didn’t take the connecting rod off the crankshaft.
