I’ve read where some super XL 925’s had a decompression valve and some didn’t. Where was the decompression valve located?

925’s never had a decompression valve, 923’s did though. They are located on top of cylinder head

I suppose the confusion comes in when somebody puts another cylinder on a saw. Even the later 77cc cylinder did not have it? Dan

I don't know when they started putting decompression valves on saws, but there are saws out there that really need to have them ,but don't have them. One that comes to my mind right away is the 100 cc XP-1000 which debuted in 1965.I have no idea what it's like to pull on one of those to start it because on mine the recoil was messed up & the piston was stuck for some reason, never did figure that one out. Another saw that comes to mind that doesn't have a decomp on is the 540,at least to my knowledge it doesn't have one on it,& that saw is 88cc. Now look at the SEZ,a mere 41 cc (the later ones, early ones were 38 cc I believe) & it had a decomp on it,& if you try to pull it over without the decomp on,you'd swear it was twice the cc's. When I start my SXL-925 it doesn't seem to be that difficult for some reason.I haven't taken a compression reading on it lately, but I'm sure it's improved from when I first got it a few months ago & was tested on a dry cylinder.Of course I'm not drop-starting it like a smaller saw either.
I think the whole reason behind decompression valves on chainsaws wasn't for the ease of the starting by the operator, but rather to be easier on the recoil parts.I've noticed that on the earlier saws that were without decomp valves that the recoils were made mostly of metal, whereas on the later, more modern saws the recoils became mostly plastic & those saws have the decomps on them. I wish my 707 had a compression release. My C-91 too for that matter. Half the time by the time I get them started I am ready for a break and I haven't even touched any wood lol
