I am facing problems with 3 saws with bad cylinders that the chrome is peeling off or is melted.
i am wondering what could be done to fix that....sleeving is doable but would be very expensive, and i am scared more day after day to buy a suposedely "good" one that ultimately at its first start the chrome would go off as well....
I went over 2 saws localy for my zip that where supposedely "good" only to find out that they are all dead for the same reason...
any ideas would be very helpfull

I'd have to say that is a pretty rare thing. Do you live in a place where the local environment is corrosive? Just checking, as I can't see what you are. Are you sure the "damage" isn't just carbon buildup &/or carbon peeling?
I prefer buying a saw in person since you can bring tools and take the muffler off to look inside at most of the cylinder wall.

no i am not in a corrosive environment at all. i live south Quebec, but humidity and frequent temperature changes are the norm. Aluminum and magnesium suffer a lot in theses situation, i can only see some corrosion caused by severe humidity, reaching the inards of the cylinder then it goes off.
the chrome is realy peeling off, near the passages ports. the saws doesnt have good compression for that reason.

You can have the cylinder(s) replated with chrome,but that isn't cheap either - $200-$250 (U,S.).Let me check with my parts supplier to see if he has a new one in stock.Again,it's going to cost probably more than you might be willing to spend ($100 - $150 U.S.). Ed

Some cylinders can be re-chromed (closed transfer ports only). Zip is open port. I would buy that nos cylinder from Chainsawlady if it's still available.

i did try to contact chainsawlady but no answer yet. i am a good machinist with all facilities, i considered sleeving the cylinder....but cant tell durability in the cast maybe it would last 2 minutes.

Joyce (chainsawlady) will get back to you sooner or later. Keeping us supplied with parts we just can't get anymore isn't her main game anymore.
I would think sleeving would have a slim chance of success/longevity. Not a shot at your, or anyone elses skills, just thinking the cylinder wasn't originally designed for that from the beginning. May not be enough meat there to play with. But if you've got the resources to do it yourself, what are you going to lose if it doesn't work?
Most of the older Pioneer & IEL Pioneer saws had sleeved cylinders from the factory but again, they were designed that way from the beginning.

fwiw here is how one looks like. i honed a bit the surface to make sure, i can defenitively feel the chrome gap at the aluminum around the exhaust port feels like there is only 0.020" of chrome or even less Attachments:

Is the chrome all gone around the exhaust port and down to the aluminum ? Looks like it is.
Homelite does NOT recommend honing chrome plated cylinders !!

the cylinder is dead, reason i honed it is to see more clearly where it is dead the chrome is all gone around the exhaust port down to the aluminum.
