Hey everyone. Ive got a blue c series with one little problem: the starter wont catch. I believe its the banks fairborn type as i dont recognize it. Definitely not the pawl type on the super xl. Im not sure what saw this is exactly, every msrking and label is gone. Has a tilly 141 on it and makes a ton of power when it does run, albeit its pretty rich with the screws all the way in.

It has a one way clutch on it fairly easy to replace. Leon probably has one

Basically, none of the parts in this image should have oil on them. The friction shoe assembly won't extend and grip the starter cup if any of the washers pictured have oil on them.

Mistakes are the best teaching tools I must be a genius by now then. Haha Partstree had these for about 49 cents each but their minimum shipping was $8.95. 💩 So, I bought forty to bring the cost each down. 👍 Passed them out at GTG as party favors. 👌 Only have four left.

Compressed air likely isn't going to be sufficient. Best to take it apart, keeping careful track of the order & orientation of the parts, and clean them with a good degreaser. Mineral Spirits or carb cleaner should work.

I did something new that i think it worth sharing here. Even after cleaning up the starter, it still didnt wanna grab. So i took a small wire wheel to the inside of the cup for a second or two, just enough to rough it up. Now it catches every time.

Use a center punch to dimple the starter cup engagement surface every 1/16”.
And, pull gently to engage and then rip. 👍

I have a video of this thing running. This is with both needles less than half a turn out. youtu.be/iRKHqyyCoV8The spark plug that's currently installed may be causing some issues . Alternates to a Champion J6J ; AC Delco : 42M - 42MS BOSCH : W7EC N-DENSO : W20S-U NGK : B6S Saw sounds lean and did not hear four-stroking at WFO ... but, change spark plug FIRST.
