Hello,
I've recently found a decent looking HB180 leaf blower at the scrapyard and decided to take it with me. Combustion engines and everything relating to them have always been a big gap in my skill set so this was a good opportunity to get some experience. First thing I did was disassemble the blower to get to the pull start. It wasn't retracting properly. I lubricated the spring cage and now it works fine again.
When I try to start the leaf blower, the membrane will not prime with fuel and the motor will not run because of it. I disconnected the fuel lines going from the tank to the carb and made sure they were clear. I then took of the carb and put some compressed air on the ports. I then tried cleaning it with some wd40. After reassembly, the membrane still doesn't prime.
When I prime the cylinder with a couple drops of fuel, the motor will run for a second or two, so I think the motor itself is fine.
Can anyone advice on what to do next? Should I disassemble the carb and clean everything or should I replace the gaskets/ carburetor? Anything else I can do before I get to that point?
Thanks.

Welcome Aboard!
It sounds to me like a carburetor issue. These old carbs don't tolerate the new E10 fuels very well and likely have hardened the diaphragms which is causing it to not be able to pick up the fuel.
I would pick up a carburetor kit and rebuild the carburetor, making sure to clear out all of the passages in the carb (some are very small)

Thanks Rowdy, just ordered a kit. Let's see if I can get this thing going again.

Welcome to the House of Homelite.
Once you get that machine running, be sure to only use non-ethanol fuel. Ethanol is sure to make more trouble.
Keep us in the loop.

When you have the carb apart, shoot some carb cleaner through the passages, watch that it comes out the other side. Compressed air may just jam the crud in tighter. If the passages are all clear in both directions, they can be safely dried with compressed air but I do not use it till I have verified that all the junk is out.

WD-40 won't dissolve dried fuel...carb cleaner (or even brake cleaner) is a better choice.

Ok, got the carb set in and it's the wrong type. It looks like it will fit, but doesn't..."fits homelite" my ass. Anyway, might as well clean it while it's apart and see if that does anything.

So good news and bad news. The good news is that after thoroughly cleaning the carb with brake cleaner, the carb now primes! The bad news is is that it still won't run. I'm open to suggestions!

Walbro or Zama carburetor ? Is it flooding or not getting fuel ? I'm guessing it's not getting fuel. It won't crank on its own even once. I don't know what kind of carb it is. I bought a set for Zama and that didn't fit, so maybe Walbro? I made a picture while disassembling it. Maybe this will help identifying it.

That appears to be the Walbro WT-Series, it should be marked on the side WT-### .
The correct kit would be Walbro K20-WAT .
If it runs with a squirt into the carb. throat, then it's not getting fuel. (Metering diaphragm doesn't look good)
Did you check the fuel inlet screen located under the pump diaphragm ?

I'll check the type tomorrow and also if it runs with some break cleaner squirted into the throat. I did not check the screen, never got that deep into her. I'll check tomorrow also.

Don't use brake cleaner to test for running, or ether either. They will wash off the oil film on internal parts and could cause damage in just a few seconds.
Use only proper fuel mix for tests like that if you care about the engine.

Alright it's indeed a Walbro. The only other identifying information I could find on there is WT EO 169. I don't have any proper aerosol fuels I can spray in the air inlet other that brake cleaner and wd40. Suggestions?

I just use a squeeze bottle with fuel mix in it for testing. In a pinch one can use a rag with fuel mix and dribble a little bit into carburetor throat or plug hole.

I tried with some fuel in the carb throat but no dice. I noticed the primer bulb also stays full.
