I have been working on the 350 trying to figure out my no spark issue and a guy I know loaned me this to check out my saw. He used to work at a Homelite service center and when they closed it down he took it with him to his new job. It's a transformer shell (off white in color) with a 33K ohm (33,000) 1/4 watt resisor in series with a neon bulb (NE-2 I think). When substituted for the transformer it flashes to tell you the ignition module is good. Thought I would share the photo. The bulb is not very bright and is hard to see in the daylight but in a dark place it worked quite well. I have to return it to him on Monday. This is about the same setup as the tester you use to check 120VAC on your wall outlets and I bet one of those would work also.

That's nice. I've seen them before, but never used one.

Dan your procedure for checking spark on these old saws was very good but I tried it on mine and still didn't have any spark. I bought a used ignition module from a running saw off Ebay and put it on mine and still no spark. I borrowed this thing from Cal and it tells me my module is OK. Gonna have to dig a little deeper...

Ok, so no spark using wires, no spark with a new module, but indications using the "tester" that the module is OK. This tells me your module is fine, but there's a problem with the transformer. The part that this tester replaces is actually a transformer. I'd check resistance on transformer leads and see if you have an open circuit or a short. Also check the spring inside that contacts the spark plug to make sure its not loose. Here's some pics of readings off a good transformer. Dan

Dan I had checked the transformer last fall and it ohmed out OK, so it's halfway warm here today (39 degrees and no wind) so I decided I would mess with it a bit today. Ohmed out the transformer again and it checked at 2,730 ohms. I put the plug in and held it in and ohmed it out and from the input of the transformer (left hand tab) to the center pin on the plug it ohmed out at 2.73 K. Bent the tabs out a little on the transformer, put it back on, gave it a shot of ether and it fired up on the first pull but ran wide open for about 1 sec. till it burnt up the ether. Did this 3 times and so now I have the ignition problem fixed so I will investigate the intake rubber boot problem another day. Thanks for all you guy's help.

Great to hear. May have just had a poor contact on those tabs where it contacts the receptacle. Good job!

Calvin, the tester that is shown in the photos belongs to a fellow at a small shop locally that loaned it to me to use to work on my saw. He said that Homelite either supplied or sold them (he couldn't remember) to dealers to service their saws. This is the only one I have ever seen. Check my message in the first post about what is inside this thing.
Regards, Dave
