Hi Guys
I finally got the old XL 400 sparking now. It turns out that one of the screws in the handle was too long and dug into the plug wire. The one that holds the air filter bracket. It had that tab holding the wire in so tight I couldn't remove it easily. That's why I tried everything else, like replacing the coil and the, installing the electronic ignition. The wire tested good with continuity, I should have tested continuity to the case and I would have found the problem. Replaced the wire and it sparks great now. Thanks to all you guys who had all the good suggestions a few months back.

Congratulations! Those are nice looking saws. Unfortunately I've yet to see one in person. Glad to hear another one is running well.

I took a picture of it yesterday, then we had major storms hit. The saw will be out in woods today, I've got huge trees down everywhere. I have a feeling it will take every saw I have to get this mess cleaned up. It's a good time to have the old homie back, it ain't no show saw. Look at the second pic to see the problem bolt that dug into my wire. This could happen to many of old homies, be aware of it, I sure will. cmasalvage.com/xl400_1.jpgcmasalvage.com/xl400_2.jpg

Yea, I wasn't gonna say anything, but the pics are of a Xl-700, or maybe 800 or 900 series saw, not a XL-400 ? Very nice looking saw though in any case!

Yes it's the blue saw and I did say 400, well duh it is the 700. I don't know what is wrong with me. Sorry didn't mean to confuse any one. Thanks for the compliments on the work bench, believe me it's not always like that. I used a stainless steel fridge door for the top, very easy to clean up those oily messes.
I wanted to show that bolt that caused all that trouble, in case any one else runs into the same thing I did.
