A friend of mine gave me a 330 a couple of years ago because he bought a new Stihl. I messed around with it a bit last night and it had spark so I put a little gas in the tank and pulled and pulled but it would not fire. I gave it a shot of ether and it fired up and ran for about 2 sec. until it burned up the ether. Tried a little gas down the carb but NO START. Tried the ether again and it fired up and ran for about 2 sec. It was getting dark on me so I didn't have a chance to check much else. Anyone have an idea? Another question, my youngest son just bought a red XL12 Monday night and it doesn't have the metal bucking spike on it. Is that something that can be added and if so does anyone know the P/N on the spike?
Thanks, Dave

Hello and welcome to the forum Dave. On your 330, I would inspect the fuel lines, to see if there cracked/deteriorated, then see if you are getting fuel to the carb. If so, remove carb and using a flash lite look into the intake boot area, what you are looking for is evidence of damage to the black rubber boot, It may be just a crack or there might be chunks of broken up rubber in against the reed cage. If there are, you are looking at boot replacement. Involved, but easy job. There is a tutorial in the 'Help Section' If there is no damage, you might be luckiest 330 owner on the planet, and be able to get away with just a carb cleaning. I would think that it needs a boot. They were notorious for intake boot issues.
The XL12 - Check with Lawnmowertech37 on this site, he might have the spike.

Yea, gas down the carb should fire off at least just like ether would. Making sure the carb is getting gas and all is one thing, but if you're pouring some mix down the carb and it won't fire off, yet will fire off on ether, I'd start supecting ya may have a weak spark. May want to check the plug and/or replace with a new one and see what results you have.
