Did you take retainer out first?

no . this coil is a phelon, took 2 mount screws out, and the one wire from coil to core, did not see a retainer.

If you were gentle you could probably use a gear puller.

Have a look at page 2 of the EZ-Automatic Chainsaw IPL 243223-A
The Phelon coil : #24 of the diagram ..... part # 68256... uses, Coil retainer : #25 of the diagram....part # 68257...onto the, Core : #23 of the diagram...part # 68255
The Wico coil and core : #40 of the diagram....part # 68716 appears to be a one piece unit.
Have you removed the flywheel an confirmed that it is a Phelon ignition system ? The breaker box covers are different on the two systems....(#37-P..#47-W..of the diagram)
Also have you tested the coil, high tension lead, points, condenser ? results ?

Just had a look at my EZ-Automatic with Phelon Ignition...Type:10109...SN:03340774
Secondary resistance :8560 ohms
I too do not see a coil retainer but rather a hard yellow adhesive securing the coil onto the core. Removal of the coil will require some persuasion.Cut off the visible adhesive, set the core legs facing down onto a flat wood surface, drive the coil down with a wood block and hammer.
The other option is to get a new armature(core)...see a couple on eBay and a clip at Leon's store.
Best of luck !

Further investigation has revealed that my EZ-Auto :10109 sn# 03340774 .. has a Phelon coil/core assembly. Note 1 of the IPL part# A-65204...which was used on saws with serial no. below 91952093 ?? A different flywheel must also be used part # 65061 according to the IPL.
This might be another option to repair your saw jklw77.
