I still don't have the XL-102 Automatic back together, waiting on decals, but I do have another one on the shelf. I have traded and sold probably as many as I have in the last year. 20180620_150713 by Al Michaels, on Flickr

Nice. It’s almost time for some more shelves.

Wow that is a nice collection! Is the handle different on the XL Automatic on the top shelf tan the standard angled handle on the blue super xl lower down . My XL Automatic has the angle handle with the green vinyl wrap. The one you have looks more square in your he picture. Maybe just an optical illusion.

No it is different than the Super XL Auto and other handles. I've seen a few this way, but most with the angle. The link shows some more pictures www.flickr.com/photos/153595070@N02/

Sweepleader asked me that same question months ago and I told him it must be the camera angle, but I was wrong and once again Dan (Eagleeyes) and you are right, the handle on the XL auto is unlike most other handles. Almost looks like part of a full wrap. If anyone could add anything by looking at the flicker photos I would appreciate it. The bottom part of the handle goes clear to the other side and has a strap bracket to the left side

AH-HA! I was just trying to remember if that was the saw I was asking about before. My memory is not so great on a lot of things. I think that the original design of the handle on these saws was like this one on the bottom. Later, likely to save costs, they dropped the strap bracket and cut the handle short underneath the saw. I would bet angling it makes the tubing they start with shorter too. No facts here, just opinions.

You asked if it was an optical allusion or if the handle bar was straight. I did not know what you meant at the time.

I am going to remove the handle on the XL auto and I believe I will find that the handle was cut from the right side of a full wrap handle and flipped to the left side. I should be able to tell by an open tube at one end versus a sealed tube or by any tool markings. EDIT: Nope I was wrong, it is a factory square handle. I have never seen another like it.

It is going to be one of those little Homelite mysteries that might never be solved but will keep us thinking about it.
