I bought an air filter for BILs 35, it was 24 DOLLARS, it is the one listed in the both 35 IPLs, it does not even come close to fitting, when the filter is place over the stud a quarter of the filter hangs out the back and a quarter of the filter doesn't go to the top of the air box. Obviously the hole placement is wrong on this filter. I looked at the 350P IPL and that one looks like the hole placement would be right, part number A-122442 unfortunately a google search produces absolutely nothing on that part number and neither does a image search, however looking at the original 450 IPL the air filter on it, part number A-12358 looks like it would fit. I also looked at the the other two 350 IPLs, the 350 HG SL and 350 rev.2, and both use a filter with a large center hole, a small hole on top for a latching stud from the carb and a hole for the air filter cover, part number A-12225. I also looked at the 360 air filters rev 1, 2, and 3 and they are missing the second hole used to secure the air filter to the car, part number 12255-1. I think I could use the 1225-1, any ideas? 20180404_134417 by Will Gates, on Flickr 20180404_134422 by Will Gates, on Flickr 24.00 filter for the 35 part number 78209, does not fit 12225 by Will Gates, on Flickr Air filter for the 350HG, SL and first model 360 with extra hole to secure filter to carb. 12225-1 by Will Gates, on Flickr Air filter for 360 rev 1, 2, and 3 with no attachment hole 450AF by Will Gates, on Flickr Air filter for the Homelite 450

Here's a pic of a 35 air filter next to a 450/550 one. The 35 filter is dirty and a little distorted, but it was the closest one handy for a pic. You can see they're close, but the 450/550 one is a little bigger. Tried sitting the 450/550 filter on the air filter cover of the 35, and you can see it is indeed too big, and the hole doesn't line up well. 78209 should be the right filter, but the one pictured looks more like for a xl-925. It could be they sent you the wrong part! A 12225 for a 350/360 won't work because they intake from the bottom of the filter where the 35 intakes from above the carb. The air filter cover on a 35 has slotted opening for air to pass in from above the filter and the carb chamber is sealed. The 350/360 had a sealed upper chamber, hence the opening for the carb in the center for clean air to enter. If you put a 12225 filter on a 35, you'll have a direct opening of unfiltered air to the carb! Again, I think the filter listed as a 78209 is the WRONG item. Dan

Will, can you post a pic of the downdraft carb. and the underside of the air filter cover please ?
I think your 35-SL has the same intake design as the 360 IPL 17080 and could use a 12225-1 or A-12225 air filter ,you would just seal the small vent stack hole on that one. Leon has new A-12225 in stock.

That's a great point. If it does, then certainly a 12225 will work. I made the assumption it was a 35 based on the plug connector that's pictured, but everybody knows what happens when ya assume....

Wow, I never realized there were so many variations on the filters for the 35!

I believe Dan is right. Here is a couple pictures of the 35 and 925 side by side. The 35 is the smaller one. 925 and 35 by CLASEC, on Flickr 35 and 925 by CLASEC, on Flickr

For what it is worth, if you go to the parts section of Homelites website, they still show (2) of the 78209 in stock. The price is almost $23 and shipping will push it past $30. But it's the only real source I've found other than the Ebay guy.

I paid 24.00 for the one on eBay, but it doesn't fit any Homelite I know of, so as soon as I get my money back (6 days, what a crock) I'll buy one

Seller sent me a return label that would cost me 8.00 eBay fee to return the filter (my cost at the post office was 2.80) and wanted to charge a 20% restocking fee of 4.80. So seller was going to get the filter back and make 10.00. I called eBay and told them he had 24 hours to reimburse me in full and send a prepaid label or I was going to lodge a fraud complaint with my credit card company, eBay agreed.

Seller is obviously not selling the correct part. At least ebay supported you on this. The seller needs to change the listing. He wouldn't have too much trouble selling those XL-7/8/900 filters, lots more people have those saws than 35s if he just had sense enough to list them correctly!
