Hi I am trying to figure out when a chainsaw serial # 1981143 was made. The documents here do not seem to help on the older saws. I believe it says xl automatic on recoil cover. My father believes he purchased in the early sixties. Could the papers the chainsaw lady has help? How does one get help on one like this saw? Thank you Dan

Welcome to the House of Homelite! One of the first questions most ask when they sign in.
The chainsawlady kept records of her dealership sales for 50 years. According to that, similar serial numbers were sold toward the end of 1965, likely made a month or two before that. Best guess about July or August.
If you have other questions, ask away, lots of folks here to help.
What are your plans for the saw? Is it red and green?

It is red and green kinda like the one in your picture. Pa gave it to me 12 to 15 years ago. I will keep it in my small collection, that i try to run each all a short time every year. I have a 330 and four of the small trimmer models with the throttle on top. Pa used it to cut the logs for two of the houses he built for our family, and all the wood to heat them for 30 years or so. I thought it might be a couple years older than that from his stories. Thank you for helping me. Dan

I thought the xl automatic was made for many years? Did you mean the style/paint that mine has was only made for a short period? Dan

The Super XL Automatic was made for many years, but it is not the same as the XL Automatic. The are extremely similar, with only minor changes including paint.

In looking at your collection lists, neither of you guys have an xl automatic? Is that possible? Dan

Well, I have had 4 XL-500's, two right now, does that count? Both models were pretty rare due to the short production runs. I think the fact that I bought 3 of mine locally meant that a lot depends on what the local dealers stocked when the saws were available. I have never seen an XL Automatic in person although one was listed on Craigslist for a couple of months about 20 miles from me.

No, we want all the pictures we can get! It's just that the forum storage is pretty small by today's standards and it is better to use a third party hosting like Flickr. There's a thread here that explains it pretty well: houseofhomelite.proboards.com/thread/1508/adding-picture-postingFor pics that come through as attachments (like yours), I add them to the HOH Flickr account as I have time. It's slow and a bit of a PITA, so I definitely appreciate folks using the other options. BTW, great looking saw! Great family history too...nothing like keeping Dad's saw!

I have the same XL Automatic as pictured on the stool. Have been trying to find a replacement 3/8 7T sprocket but don't have the correct parts list. Didn't realize this was a limited production model. It is a workhorse saw for me. Great saw.

The sprocket is the same as the xl-12 and super xl saws. I have one and I still use it quite a bit cutting fire wood.

The original parts list show original part numbers. Homelite superseded those numbers many times with new numbers.

hope these pictures come through. Yes they did, and I couldn't help but notice as well as being an old Homelite saw fan, you're also and AC garden tractor fan. Looks like a nice B12, what's the one in the background? I have a similar tractor in Homelite dress myself, a T16 shuttle. Really love those old Simplicity/Allis/Homelite tractors.
