So I wasn’t gonna mess with this one until summer when it was too hot to be outside. I got my 2050, 2159 and 395 rebuilt and running, waiting on bearings and seals for the 2139. Got all the part to put the 2255 back together, but I couldn’t resist fiddling with the 925 tonight. Got it cheap out of the junk pile a few weeks ago.
I had left it soaking hoping the rings were just stuck and tonight I went back and checked spark, dumped fuel in the carb, and could only get it to blow flames out the exhaust port (muffler guts out) a couple times. Compression is still 90 psi. Rings seem free but the upper one feels like it’s down in the groove. There has to be a reason the mechanic sold it to me out of the junk pile for $10. I’m think it needs rings, y’all? Oh, one good thing...the chain is carbide! Been wanting one for dirty/risky wood/stumps.
Thanks!

Pull the cylinder and see what everything looks like. There may be damage you can’t see, then again maybe no damage and it’s just the rings. At this point, pulling the cylinder is the next step.

Welcome, sounds like that one will be fun. I have never even seen a carbide chain, nice score!

What size chain do you have that's carbide?I know back in 2012 when I bought my MS250 I wanted to put a 14 in.chain on it & the dealer went to take it off another saw. That saw had a carbide tipped chain on it & he quickly saif"Oh you don't want that chain",I asked him why not & he said because t was more expensive because t was a carbide tipped chain.I asked him how much,& he said $40.Now I know that carbide tipped chains are more expensive than that, but it's great to have one. My guess is that your XL-925 was owned by a professional tree removal service. They use the carbide chains for the tree in people's backyards that had tree houses & swings in them that are loaded with nails & such.

I haven’t measured, but I’d say the bar is about 24”. Black goo in the tank, grommet gone. Compression was up to 100 but that might have just been oil in the cylinder. Still won’t quite fire. Planning on a full tear down.
How do I add pictures here? Link to outside source it would seem?
