I started going through my XL-101 that I got a couple of months ago.First,I've got alternating spark.I reset the gap on the coil, changed the spark plug. The wire going from the coil to the switch is questionable.I don't like the set up they have for that wire - it lays in a little slot that was grooved out for that wire.Apparently the wire must've worn through at one point because it's all taped up.I was thinking of drilling a hole just under the slot & putting a grommet of some sort & then running the wire through that. The second problem I have is that when I put oil in the saw it runs out of the bottom of the saw almost as fast as IO pour it in.I checked the oil line & it's intact & not leaking there. Is there a gasket that went bad?Does the 101 have a split tank?

The early XL-101's had epoxied tanks that were prone to leakage. Usually you can look at the tank seam and see it easily. Homelite released a repair kit with a gasket and special screws, but they aren't too common. The best way to deal with this is to find a factory tank with screws, part# A-65572. I can't find any available at this time, so it may be best to search for a later version of the tank with the replaceable gasket.

I believe chainsawlady has the kits to repair the oil reservoirs. If not, you can always make your own gasket. I know she has the screws. See instructions in pics

Thanks Greg, this could very well be the lifesaver for the 101.If I couldn't fins the parts I needed I was getting ready to write it off & part it out.It seems too good of a saw to do that.

I just saw a post that Sawnami did on his 450 with a leaking oil/gas tank partition. He used some stuff that he said he's used on at least 10 gas tanks over the yrs.I was thinking, why couldn't I just remove the old epoxy, perhaps by sanding it off, then reapply new epoxy & seal it up again, rather than waiting for a kit to come available? The epoxy glues that are out there now are much better than when the XL-101 came out.
I did a little"investigation"today. It looks to me like the 101 I have has a gasket in it already.Which gasket is it,the oil tank gasket,or the crankcase gasket?

This was an unbelievable find today on Ebay.I was searching for a coil for my XL-101,I tested mine today & it's very weak - 6.2 ohms.Coils on the Bay are quite expensive,I think I found a used one cheap for $30 plus shipping.New ones started at $49.Then I saw a pic of a 101 power head,it looked in really nicer shape.I thought sdomeone did a good job on cleaning it up,they were asking $43 or make offer.I clicked to look at the details & I almost fell off my chair. This thing is NIB! I figured I'd make an offer of $35,& if they don't accept my offer they may counter-offer.They accepted my offer!Shipping is $26,so for $61 I've got a brand new XL-101! Can you believe that?!! Oh,there's one drawback - it says I might have to clean the carb because of sitting on a shelf.Lol
