New to the board...and chainsaws for that matter. I have never owned a saw and I don't have a lot of money to play with so I did some research and discovered that these old Homelites are some of the best made in the USA saws and made in the USA pretty much does not exist anymore....so I bought a Super EZ Auto on Criagslist for $20. I don't think the kid knew what he had. This is the story I got....said he inherited the saw from his grandfather. He said it ran in the winter of 2016/2017 and this year it wouldn't really run. He said it would run after many pulls and "probably needs an air filter." When I bought the thing the front handle was off of it and the bottom screws that hold it on are missing. I think it is a 1980 model. I have not tried to start it honestly as I would prefer to go through this thing one step at a time before I even start. As I said I have done a lot of research on this thing so I popped the cover of the muffler off and looked at the piston and took a few pics. I also looked at the air filter and can see that air filter was a little caked with saw dust on the top and the little rubber piece at the hole in the middle was worn away so I assume the filter isn't working right and the carb is probably dirty. What do you guys think on this piston?

Piston looks good. Has a little carbon scoring ,but not too bad and the rings look almost new. Great saw.

Million dollar question... What fuel ratio do I use? Original manual online says 16:1.....seems a little thick lol. I was told 40:1. I see some saying 32:1. I hear this is a tough little saw but I probably will not be taking on huge jobs with it. I do want to take care of it if I can get it up and going.
That spark plug looks fairly new but I'm not sure that is the correct plug to use. It says it is a match but I'm curious on what the pros think.

Not a pro by any means but 40:1 is the ratio I have used for years with no problems. Homelite oil when it was still made, Walmart Super Tech 2 cycle oil now. Champion DJ6J is the specified plug. Gap at .025. I personally like NGK plugs, BM7F for Super EZ. Hope this helps!

50:1 stihl ultra is what I use. Have to be careful with the cheaper brand oils as they do not lubricate as well.

Welcome to House of Homelite. The EZ/Super EZ family are great saws. I own 2. If you need any help or advise here is the place to ask. I run the same plug in my saw no issues.

This post is for all members here.DO NOT USE Wal Mart brand 2 cycle mix! It is NOT JASO certified. If you want to take a chance on burning up your engines, then by all means go ahead & use it.As TJ said, the cheaper oils don't lubricate as well. Not only the lubrication issue, but you'll gunk up your carbs.I've ruined several carbs by using that "Super Tech"crap. The old saying goes"you can pay me now,or you can pay me later"holds very true here.Stop & think about it - how much money are you really"saving"by using it? Oh yes,Welcome to HOH!

Thanks all. I'm close to cleaning this bad boy up. Does anyone have a good link or video to a disassembly type guide? I know there is a good carb rebuild video on YouTube.
I probably need to start with dumping the old gas and oil. Next get the thing cleaned up and trying to clean the carb. Then if it starts, get the handle on but I need the two special screws on the bottom and I think I need the screws that attach the top red piece to the saw. I know I can order them. If I get it running I'll either clean the air filter and order the rubber center or just order a new air filter.
I'll use good oil. Any recommendations on bar and chain oil?...or what to clean everything up with? Covers etc.

Leon has grommets for the center of the air filter. Chainsawlady or Leon likely has screws. Do you have an IPL for the part numbers? www.leonschainsawpartsandrepair.com/parts-diagrams.html I did not look but the size and length of the screws are often listed in the IPL so you can source them locally if you want to. I like the Homelite screws myself, they are good quality and have the correct heads and lengths. Check there for a Homelite repair manual too, they are at the bottom of the page on the Service Memos tab.

As others have said, welcome to HOH! Good looking saw you have! One note, I see it has that E3 plug...I haven't had the greatest of luck with them. I've had several fail in the chainsaws and out of a set of eight for my Silverado back in the day, one was bad and threw a misfire code within 2 weeks of installation. My personal preference is to stick with the Champion plugs in Homelite saws.

You might not need to tear the carb apart and rebuild, not that it's very complicated. If it doesn't run well after that then rebuild it using ONLY a OEM Walbro K10-HDC kit; their worth the extra $2. Welcome and good luck with your new saw. Steve

The two lower handle bar screws are 10-32x7/8". The upper handle bar bracket to drivecase screws are a special shouldered bolt, #64613-A.
