Nice reference there Kyle. The AS article and a couple IPL's (https://www.leonschainsawpartsandrepair.com/parts-diagrams.html) list 12282a for the FW side which SKF says is 6120 and 58308b for the pto which SKF does not interchange. I could not find any of these numbers in the National listing.
Leon, what do you think about this?

I have used the 6120 successfully on the flywheel side. The 12282-A supersedes the 58688-A. I'm still working on sourcing a replacement for the drivecase side of a Super XL (70729). I may have found an SKF metric seal that will work, but I'll have to get back to you guys.

The SKF says to sub their 6120 for the 70729! Hmm, wonder what is going on there.

-F/W Seal:12282A (OLD # 58688A). SKF 6119 double lip. SKF 6120 single lip. National 253747
Super XL's used 58308A or B on the PTO side.
I think XL-12's call for both sides 12282A or 58688 which is the 6119, 6120 or 253747. The National (now Timken) seals run a bit more than a thou larger on the OD so can be a bit tougher to get in.

58308 B. They interchange.
I've never been able to find a direct replacement for that seal. Same for the 12306 seal used on the later saws like the Super 650, 750 and some others in that family.
The case pocket on the saw I measured was 0.94" or 23.88 mm
For a steel case seal the range on fit would be 0.945" +/- 0.002" or 24.01mm +/- 0.050mm
For a case coated in rubber (most metric seals) 24.08 +/- 0.08mm
Shaft size is 21/32" or 0.656" or 16.7mm
Closest I can find is 16mm which is about 0.60mm - 0.66mm too tight
A Timken 16X24X4 Fits well into the case pocket for a rubber coated seal at an actual OD of 24mm
The seal will be too tight on the shaft which will add drag to the saw and will eventually groove the crankshaft if the saw is to be used a lot.
The width of the 58308 seal is 0.125" and the width of the 16X24X4 is 4mm or 0.157" I don't recall if there is any fit issues on width of the seal and the case pocket depth on the Homelites.
Take note that the part number on a metric seal is the approximate size for the OD of the seal.
first number is always the shaft diameter, not the actual ID of the seal
The second number is the approximate OD of the seal. Different 16X24X?? can have a different diameter on the OD even though it's listed for 24mm.
The last number, seal width (depth if it was lying flat on a table).
Example
a 16X24X4 seal has an actual OD of 24mm and fits a 23.8mm pocket
a 16X24X6 seal has an actual OD of 24.2mm and fits a 24mm pocket.
The second seal will be very tight in the bore (read that as won't fit) on a Homelite that uses the 58308 seal.
I have intended to try one of these but just haven't got around to it.
I hope this isn't too confusing but it may provide an alternate that just may work

Have a real nice SXL-AO here in need of a PTO seal and I'm facing the same issue sourcing a 58308 replacement. I found the 'great big cross-ref sheet' from a link here somewhere that goes to great lengths specifying suitable replacements 'from across the globe' which include Dic 0609318TC in that section (among others) and CR 6130 in the 'general' section.
Are they suitable replacements or aren't they? If not, why would they be listed as such? And if not, are folks just bitin' the bullet and taking their chances with 45 year old $20 NOS 58308's or UP07021's when they can find them?
