Hi folks,
Nice forum here.
I just picked up my dad's old Super XL a few weeks ago. The saw had been sitting unused for several years. I cleaned out the recoil assembly because it wasn't retracting the cord consistently. Then I replaced the rotted fuel line.
I didn't even open up the carb - but it starts great and idles fine. I cut a bit of wood with it last week; it did great. Had to put a new duckbill in the gas cap.
The automatic oiler isn't working, but the manual oiler works. I looked at an IPL. There's a black plastic screw head behind the oil cap. I removed that and it looks like the oil pickup for the automatic oiler. The line and filter are nowhere to be seen, so I'm draining the bar oil and I'm going filter fishing...
After I put a new "rubber line" on the oil pickup, anything else I'll need to do, ya think? Do you think I'll need a new O-ring on the oil pump plunger?
To get to the oil pump, or to take off the oil tank, I'll need to remove the clutch? That will require a special tool, right?
I'm hoping a new rubber line will do the trick.

Yes, I replaced the oil line with some extra fuel line I had (from replacing the fuel line earlier). The tricky part was getting the old filter with old line attached out of the oil tank fill hole. I didn't really take anything apart, just shook the saw around, and removed the old line/filter with something like this: www.ares-server.com/Ares/Ares.asp?MerchantID=RET01229&Action=Catalog&Type=Product&ID=21116AActually, I've seen a longer version of the above with a flexible sheath - that would work a lot better. Anyway, I replaced the oil line, and, just to clean it out, I ran ATF through the oiler system. It worked fine. So I drained the ATF and filled it with clean bar lube. The Super XL oils at idle, so, if you idle for a while, you can look down at the chain and see the lube start welling up.
