Hey there jklw77, if the number is right as you state, it was issued by Homelite in 1980. It is entirely possible that the part to which the number is affixed could have been changed at some point for one off a later saw. Those saws were made from 1963 like Joyce said into the '80s and many parts interchange. Going by the number, the only answer is 1980. I don't have a suggestion as to why the last part of the number is 7489. According to Homelite, that would mean they built 7489 saws that single day, very unlikely.
Is that number stamped into an aluminum plate near the on-off switch? Is it printed on a sticker? Do all the numbers look the same, any of them look hand stamped? It is possible the number was remarked for who knows what reason. Is the saw blue and white or red? Some other color?

Here's the original post, " Have a blue and white XL12 HOMELITE with a solid 18" bar.Was purchases 2nd hand in around 60s .
It has a serial #03397489 no prefix or suffix on a tag riveted beside on / off switch, it has a manual oiler, oil filler on lower right hand back side of saw."
