Also original Homelite bars were either 16 or 20 length, no 18". The length they called 16" may be 18" long but it would only cut 16" of wood. chainsawlady

I am curious that the saw in question has an 8 digit serial number... What's with that? I believe the 8 digit number came in around 1970 and according to the TSB's I have seen indicate the first digit in the 8 digit numbers indicate the year built, in this case 1970, after the 9 digit serial numbers came in the first digit was the assembly line and the second digit OR letter indicated the year.

03397489 on his XL12 is 8 digits, the first 8 digit starting place number on TSB 185-008 is 2 for 1972 and 0 is for 1980. 1980 also used the letter B on Terry saws for 1980 as I understand it but I have not seen that on a Homelite document.
Joyce's records show 9 digits in 1977 but it does not define the start date for 9 digits.

Yep you're right, I think I went the wrong direction on the numbers when he said his XL-12 was blue and white, that would be a pre 1973 saw wouldn't it? My blue and white 1972 Super XL Auto is 22070187 an 8 digit number built in 1972. I wonder if there is a mistake in his reading the number, happens all the time.

What sweepleader said was....."The FIRST 8 digit starting place number on TSB-185 -008 is 2 for 1972".....meaning the TSB doesn't start at 1971....so a 12601188 and 12870139.......maybe blue and white saws built in 1981..but I could be wrong.

As I see it, this is correct, both of those saws are 1981 and the saw that started this is a 1980, unless someone else has different information.

Whew, I really got confused on that one and I know I knew this before, just not sleeping much I guess. I better not even say what I did the other day.

...Then the original posters saw would be a 1973, right? No, the OP stated his serial number was: 03397489. That is a 1980 8 digit number. The first digit is 0 for 1980, the next 3 are 339 for December 5. The remainder, 7489 makes no sense in my mind since it is hard to believe Homelite built 7500 saws in one day. That makes the entire number suspect. I think the OP got some thing wrong transcribing the number, especially since he thought the saw was bought 2nd hand the '60s. The OP, jklw77, has not been back to verify the serial number so there is not much more that can be done with it.

That's what threw me, nothing about the serial number or the description of the saw jived.
