Figured I would show off my lack of knowledge this evening and ask this likely very easy question. I have noticed in a lot of pictures I see of saws with long bars that the bar has like a tip guard around the end of it and maybe backs up about 6 inches or so down the bar. It appears that maybe its there to protect the chain and tip from hitting the ground or something maybe the bed of a truck or something just to protect the chain when starting or handling it. Anyone notice any of these and might know what they are for?

I think you are looking at a "helper handle" for use on a two man saw. The brave guy out on the end holds onto that to help maneuver the saw.
