I bought this saw from a guy in Ontario that got it from his dad who supposedly bought it new. He wanted me to send a money order so I did, I didn't know they can't cash a Postal Money Order at s Canadian bank and I didn't know the Post Office had international money orders. I tried to get the guy to take paypal or a wire transfer, but he insisted on a money order. He's about an hour away from the US side so maybe he can go across the border when the snow melts. 20171228_211307 by Al Michaels, on Flickr 20171228_211500 by Al Michaels, on Flickr 20171228_211233 by Al Michaels, on Flickr 20171228_211452 by Al Michaels, on Flickr 20171228_211242 by Al Michaels, on Flickr

Very nice, I have never seen one of those before, very nice. I mentioned this on the Homelite Facebook page and a couple young-uns popped off and said they had one like it, but I couldn't get anyone to post a picture. There was another later version called the Super XL-902AM, but I'm not sure if that model was Canadian built or not, I would assume so.The later versions weren't three color saws either. I doubt this version was made for more than a year or two. I pretty sure this guy posted a query here back in the first week of November asking about the saws worth, but I didn't see any more posts from him.

Very nice score on a rare saw! I doesn't appear to have many hours on it.

Very nice score on a rare saw! I doesn't appear to have many hours on it. The saw did not have the S spring clip on it and it allowed a loose fit causing damage to the guide plates. The inner plate was trashed, the outer plate will suffice. Someone replaced the adjustment screw with a 1/4" hex head shoulder bolt and rethreaded the adjustment pin to a coarse thread with no adjustment screw nut on the end. Inside the drivecase shows the chain has repeatedly came off, fortunately mostly cosmetic damage. Hence my order. Thanks Leon

Hi Al, I just noticed your post.I must live very close to you,I say this because I too live about 1 hr.from the Canadian border.I live between Buffalo & Rochester,N.Y.-Town of Pembroke.I also just picked up an XL-902,but I'm not sure of the sub-model (AM).My saw was/is in pretty rough shape,I have pics of it on my most recent post"Can anyone identify this saw?"I'm missing the bar plates, air filter, clutch cover,& bar & chain. As for the bar plates - I tried a pair off one of my 540's.They seem to fit OK,the oiler holes line up OK,bar nuts fit OK too.I've got a long way to go on my saw just to get t running I'll need to rebuild the carb. You mentioned something about a spring for the bar plates?I'm not aware that there was a spring for them.Let me know where you live, maybe we can get together for a coffee sometime.I hope that when my saw is finished it'll look half as good as yours does. Ed

Ed I live in Northeast Oklahoma, going to be tough getting together for coffee, lol. I have had almost every saw I bought shipped to me, there aren't old saws or old machines in a state that wasn't admitted to the Union until 1907. My saw was listed for sale on Toronto Craigslist. The S clip is a small S shaped part that fits over the bar studs to compensate for the wider bar slots on modern Homelite bars. Originally the older Homelite saws had 5/16" bar studs and the older Homelite bars had 5/16" slots, but later Homelite changed the studs to 3/8" and the slots in the bars to 3/8". This spring wraps around the smaller studs and takes up the slack between the studs and the bar. My description of the situation is probably not 100 percent accurate, but that's the jist of the situation with the S clip or spring, others will correct my information shortly. Just wondering are you into older garden tractors as well?

I think oologahan has it pretty well knocked regarding the S clip. The only thing I would add would be that the S is formed from a flat strip not quite as wide as the bar is thick.
Some of the IPL's have them listed.

I saw that one for sale on CL and Kijiji and it's good to see it went to a collector. I have a parts saw and one not near as nice as yours. There appeared to be two slightly different paint schemes. Mine doesn't show a hint of red paint on the recoil shield and the complete one has a clutch cover with no Homelite name and a faded silk screened 902 AM logo on it. They are strong runners. They seem to be a little more common than the Super XL-902 which I believe had a red and white paint scheme and looks to be a later model. I compressed the pics to save space. I need to get a photo storage account. The model No. on the Terry tag is 50002

Hi Al, Wow! I see those saws all decked out like that & it makes my mouth water.LOL It's a shame that there are probably tons of old Homelites in landfills all over this country.Just like the 10 saws I picked up last week at a Stihl & Husqvarna dealership. There wasn't a lot wrong with the saws that I picked up,just finding some of the parts I need is going to be difficult. The dealer just wanted to sell a new saw. Yeah you're right about getting together for coffee.I just assumed when you said you were about an hr.away from the Canadian border that you were in my area.I think that's how my XL-902 migrated it's way down here.I found a tag on one of my Homies that said "Blossom Hardware".Blossom is a small community not far from where I live (about 40 min.drive),so I called info yesterday & got the # for the store, figuring they might have some NOS parts.Well the store went out of business in 2002.It seems that I was about 16 yrs.too late.I thnk the store ordered their saws from out of Canada, but I wasn't a dealer,so I don't know how it worked. As for old garden tractors - I've got an old John Deere 140.It's a hydostatic drive with a mower deck (I don't use it) & a dozer blade too.I use it mostly for hauling fire wood.I also have a 1956-1959 Allis Chalmers WD-45 farm tractor that has an engine in it from a D-15,which gives it 10 more h.p.That has a dozer type blade as well.It hasn't run since last April. It has no spark. So that's my story. Ed

Tim can you post a picture of your XL-902AM ID tag Tim your XL-902AM is a 1980 model, mine is around 1968-1970. It's hard to say if your XL-902AM was made during the same time as the Super XL-902AM, but I would bet so.
