I have come across 3 different color ignition modules on my Homies. Black, blue (on 450's) and light brown (DM50).
Anyone know of the differences? They look the same and I've been told the blue one on a 450 can be replaced by a black one etc.
Any experience with these out there?

Pretty sure the blue one used on the 450 had a rev limiter built in. The 450 had a fixed hi-speed jet so I think they used the rev limiting trigger module in conjuction with the fixed carb. If you can get em, I think most would agree its preferable to put a 550 carb on a 450, and if you do so, then there's definitely no reason not to use a black module with it. I guess there could be a risk of running a black module with the fixed jet carb. I haven't tried, so can't say for sure. I'm not familiar with the light brown one used on the DM50, but suspect it may also be rev limited, possibly at a lower RPM than the blue one. Pure speculation on my part though.

I posed the same question to the local saw shop guy where I get stuff done. His Dad was a Homelite dealer years ago. He told me that the blue module really did not have a rev limiter ; there was a governor in the carburator. Who knows? I know the 925's had governors in the carbs etc.
The DM50 has the same carb as the 450.
I tried to put an SDC from one of my 550's on a 450. The 450 ran like shi*. Put the fixed jet carb back on and it ran like a virgin in Harlem. Could not figure it out. Who knows?
Still hoping to find a definative info source. Thanks Dan for the info etc.
Happy Holidays. Don't eat too much. But if you do, do it well.

I checked a bit in one of the service manuals, and it states that the 450s module did indeed limit RPMs. There was a section on the DM50 as well, but it didn't mention anything there about the module. It did show the carb as being the same as the 450, so I'd bet money that the brown module also limits. I guess one way to see is to use a tach. Swap the modules around on a saw and see what the results are.
Merry Christmas! Dan
