I picked up an xl 923 the other day runs goods 24 inch bar. The issue is the handle is broke, throttle still works broke just behind it. What is the differnce with 923 to 925. Seems the 925 is the hot item

The thing that was most unique about 925s are they're the only one of the 7/8/9 series that used thin rings. This was true up until sometime around late 80s or early 90s when Homelite decided to reduce it to 4.7 cu in as well as no more thin rings. So many parts interchange that you're apt to find any combination of parts in a used saw, but if you look at the IPLS, thin rings were only for the 925s.

The 923 also had a decompression valve, while the 925 didn't.

Dan Here is a picture the 923 thick ring and the 925 thin ring. If your 923 has an oval port for the exhaust like the one pictured you could use the 925 piston. I have a 923 with the thin ring piston and it runs very well.

Looks like mine has the rectangular port. I pulled the muffler looks good no scoring on the piston, some very light scratches near the base of the piston. Hope to get the saw together and post some pictures.
